There are two ways to obtain Life Orbs in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

You can visit the Battle Maison’s Exchange Service Corner and trade 48 Battle Points (BP) for a Life Orb, and you can do this as many times as you want.

Or you can steal Life Orbs as held items from wild Absol found on Route 120. Each Absol only has a 5% chance of holding a Life Orb, but you can use your DexNav to improve your odds.

Method 1: Battle Maison’s BP Shop

The Battle Maison operates similarly to the Battle Tower from previous generations.

If you don’t know where the Battle Maison is, just head over to the Battle Resort’s Pokémon Center to get started.

Step 1: From the Battle Resort’s Pokémon Center, proceed slightly east and then head up the staircase at the nearby intersection.

Step 2: After going up the stairs, just keep going north and enter the Battle Maison.

Step 3: Once you’re inside, you’ll see two staircases going upstairs. Head up the right one.

Step 4: On the second floor you’ll find one of the Exchange Service Corner’s attendants. If you’ve got at least 48 BP then you can purchase a Life Orb from her.

Note that you can repeat this process as many times as you want.

In the Exchange Service Corner, two attendants offer a wide variety of valuable items in exchange for BP.

The left attendant sells Vitamins, EV training items, and evolution items. The right attendant sells held items used in battles, including the Life Orb.

Here’s a complete list of items offered as prizes by the attendant on the right:

Method 2: Stealing from Wild Absol

If you want an alternate & free method to get Life Orbs, then you can steal them from wild Absol on Route 120.

This route becomes accessible shortly after you deal with Team Aqua/Magma in the Weather Institute.

There’s a 5% chance that you’ll encounter a wild Absol in the patches of grass along the route. And each Absol has a 5% chance of holding a Life Orb – so this can take a lot of grinding just to get one.

Here is the full list of Pokémon you can find in the tall grass of Route 120:

Route 120 Wild Pokémon
Pokémon Encounter Rate Levels
Absol 5% 27
Gloom 40% 24-27
Linoone 40% 27
Tropius 10% 27
Kecleon 5% 27

When you encounter a wild Absol that’s holding a Life Orb, you can use TM46 Thief to steal the item.

We also created a separate guide on how to farm held items fast with an optimized item farming team. Check that out for some extra tips!

But to further increase your chances of finding a Life Orb, you can use your DexNav’s Detector Mode.

After catching a specific species of Pokémon, you can use the DexNav to track more of the same species in the wild.

Each encounter with more of this same Pokémon will increase the DexNav’s search level.

As this level rises, the likelihood of encountering Pokémon carrying items also increases.

How the Life Orb Works

In-game details for Life Orb

The Life Orb is a held item that boosts the damage dealt by the holder’s attacking moves by 30%, but it causes the holder to take damage equal to 10% of their max HP every time it uses an attacking move.

And this is one of the better held items to use in ORAS.

In fact, the Life Orb is one of the most commonly-used held items in competitive battles.

While the Life Orb offers a lesser damage boost than the Choice Band and Choice Specs, it still lets the user switch moves – making it ideal for Pokémon with an array of coverage moves.

And even though it deals some damage to the holder, it’s still worth using in many cases. Because it might make the difference between knocking out your opponent or letting them survive with a sliver of HP.

So the Life Orb is the go-to item for all-out-attackers and sweepers.

Pokémon with high offenses, speed, and extensive coverage (like Greninja or Garchomp) are popular and effective Life Orb users in competitive play.

Tip: The Life Orb pairs up really well with Pokémon with the Sheer Force ability. This ability enhances the power of moves with additional effects by 30%, while negating these effects. This ability also negates the recoil damage of the Life Orb, allowing you to avoid Life Orb’s drawback. Similarly, the ability Magic Guard also negates Life Orb’s HP cost.
