You’ll get HM04 Strength from the Safari Zone Warden in his house in Fuchsia City. But you’ll need to give him his Gold Teeth before he’ll give you the HM.
The Warden’s Gold Teeth can be found in the last area of the Safari Zone.
So you can get HM04 at any point after you reach Fuchsia City.
Prerequisites
This is what you need to do before you can get HM04:
- Have at least 500 Pokédollars to enter the Safari Zone
- Find the Warden’s Gold Teeth in the west area of the Safari Zone.
Getting HM04 Strength
Where To Find the Gold Teeth
Starting from the Fuchsia City Pokémon Center, head northeast.
Then head east past the old man.
At the end of the path, head north.
Head west above the Chansey.
Finally, go southeast and enter the Safari Zone Building.
Head north and you’ll be stopped by the man at the right counter. He says you’ll need to pay 500 Pokédollars before you can enter.
Pay your fee and then enter the Safari Zone.
Note: Once you enter the Safari Zone, you’re allowed 500 steps before you’re automatically kicked out. You can check how many steps you have left by pressing the Start button and looking in the top left corner of the screen.
At the start of the Safari Zone, head east until you reach the bushes.
Once you reach the bushes, head north until you reach the big tree next to the blue right arrows.
Head east following the blue arrows and enter the east area of the Safari Zone.
In this new area, head east past the sign.
Walk up the stairs on the first rock you see, then go down the stairs on the left.
Then head north until you see another rock with stairs.
Walk up the stairs on the rock, and head east.
Go down the stairs and around the rock. Then, head west through the grass.
Go past the sign and towards the blue arrows.
Head west here following the blue arrows and enter the north area of the Safari Zone.
In this new area, head west into the grass.
Head north and up the stairs on the rock.
Walk southwest down the stairs at the bottom of the rock.
Now go northwest through the grass until you’re between two big trees.
From these trees, head east until you reach more tall grass.
Walk up through the grass, and then go west above the bushes. Follow this path until you reach the western end.
Then go south until you reach some more blue arrows pointing south.
Head south following the blue arrows and enter the final area of the Safari Zone.
In this final area, head south.
You’ll find a Pokéball item on the ground here. It’s the Warden’s Gold Teeth.
After you leave the Safari Zone, you need to head to the Warden’s House to return his teeth to him.
Returning the Warden’s Teeth
Starting from the Fuchsia City Pokémon Center, head east.
The Warden’s house is the first house you’ll see – it should be sitting right above a signpost.
Go inside and talk to the Warden with the teeth in your bag.
You’ll give him his Gold Teeth, and as a reward he gives you HM04 Strength.
Note: To use Strength outside of battle, you first need to obtain the Rainbowbadge by defeating Erika in Celadon City.
Strength Details + Uses
Strength Move Details | |
---|---|
Type | Normal |
Power | 80 |
Accuracy | 100% |
PP | 15 (max. 24) |
Effect | No additional effect in battle. Outside of battle, lets you move boulders around. |
With 80 power, Strength is a fairly strong Normal type attack.
Though there are Normal-type moves that have more power such as Mega Kick and Double Edge, Strength has the advantage of having 100% accuracy and no recoil.
Even Mega Punch, which also has 80 power and can be purchased repeatedly at the Celadon Mart, only has 85% accuracy. (Though Mega Punch does have more PP with 20.)
Strength will also gain a same type attack bonus (STAB) when used by a Normal type Pokémon.
However, of the handful of Normal type Pokémon that can learn Strength, only two have a high ATK stat in Pokémon Yellow: Tauros and Snorlax.
So while Strength has its advantages over other Normal type attacks, its effectiveness in battle is limited.
Being an HM also means that Strength can be taught an unlimited amount of times to multiple different Pokémon.
Outside of battle, Strength lets you push boulders around.
There are certain areas where you can’t progress without moving a few boulders, so getting HM04 is required to beat the game.
