How To Get HM04 Strength in Pokémon Yellow

Speaking with the Safari Zone Warden

You’ll get HM04 Strength from the Safari Zone Warden in his house in Fuchsia City. But you’ll need to give him his Gold Teeth before he’ll give you the HM.

The Warden’s Gold Teeth can be found in the last area of the Safari Zone.

So you can get HM04 at any point after you reach Fuchsia City.

Prerequisites

This is what you need to do before you can get HM04:

  1. Have at least 500 Pokédollars to enter the Safari Zone
  2. Find the Warden’s Gold Teeth in the west area of the Safari Zone.

Strength Details + Uses

Strength Move Details
Type Normal
Power 80
Accuracy 100%
PP 15 (max. 24)
Effect No additional effect in battle. Outside of battle, lets you move boulders around.

With 80 power, Strength is a fairly strong Normal type attack.

Though there are Normal-type moves that have more power such as Mega Kick and Double Edge, Strength has the advantage of having 100% accuracy and no recoil.

Even Mega Punch, which also has 80 power and can be purchased repeatedly at the Celadon Mart, only has 85% accuracy. (Though Mega Punch does have more PP with 20.)

Strength will also gain a same type attack bonus (STAB) when used by a Normal type Pokémon.

However, of the handful of Normal type Pokémon that can learn Strength, only two have a high ATK stat in Pokémon Yellow: Tauros and Snorlax.

So while Strength has its advantages over other Normal type attacks, its effectiveness in battle is limited.

Being an HM also means that Strength can be taught an unlimited amount of times to multiple different Pokémon.

Outside of battle, Strength lets you push boulders around.

There are certain areas where you can’t progress without moving a few boulders, so getting HM04 is required to beat the game.
