Getting TM27 Fissure

The Viridian City Gym is a large area with multiple paths that can lead to trainer battles.

This guide will show you the quickest route to Gym Leader Giovanni.

Staring from the inside of the Viridian Gym, walk northwest through the gap in the walls.

Tips for Fighting Giovanni

Watch out for Fissure and Horn Drill. Giovanni’s Dugtrio and Rhydon know Fissure and Horn Drill respectively. These two moves have very low accuracy, but will instantly KO any Pokémon. However, Fissure won’t work against Flying type Pokémon since it’s a Ground type attack.

Watch out for Nidoqueen and Nidoking’s Thunder. Giovanni’s Nidoqueen and Nidoking both know Thunder. This is a move that these two Pokémon don’t normally learn and it offers coverage against Water and Flying type Pokémon.

Once you defeat Giovanni, he’ll give you TM27 Fissure along with the Earthbadge.

Fissure Details + Uses

Fissure Move Details
Type Ground
Power
Accuracy 30%
PP 5 (max. 8)
Effect Instantly makes the opposing Pokémon faint. Doesn’t work if the opposing Pokémon is faster than the user.

Fissure is a powerful move that always knocks out a Pokémon with one hit.

The major drawback is that Fissure has an incredibly low accuracy at 30%.

Also, being a Ground-type move, Fissure doesn’t affect Flying-type Pokémon. Furthermore, Fissure will not work on a Pokémon that’s faster than the user.

While Fissure’s promise of one-hit KO’s is tempting, its high miss potential and speed requirements make it a pretty unreliable move in practice. So it’s rarely ever worth using in a regular playthrough.
