|1||Goldenrod Dept. Store Basement. Accessible from the Goldenrod Underground with the Basement Key.||No|
The Amulet Coin is located in an isolated room in the Goldenrod Dept. Store Basement. This area is only accessible from the Goldenrod Underground with the Basement Key.
You’ll get the Basement Key after defeating a Team Rocket Exec. on the fifth floor (5F) of the Goldenrod Radio Tower. This is part of the main game’s storyline, and it becomes available after collecting seven Johto Gym Badges. You’ll get a call from Prof. Elm warning you that there’s trouble at the Radio Tower.
The primary prerequisite to getting the Amulet Coin is acquiring the Basement Key to enter the Goldenrod Underground Basement.
To get it, you must:
- Collect seven Johto Gym Badges.
- Get a call from Prof. Elm warning of trouble at the Radio Tower.
- Battle your way up the Goldenrod Radio Tower until reaching the fifth floor (5F).
- Defeat the Team Rocket Exec. impersonating the Radio Director.
The Team Rocket Exec. will surrender the Basement Key upon defeat. Use it to rescue the real Radio Exec. and get your Amulet Coin.
Getting the Amulet Coin
Starting at Goldenrod’s Pokémon Center, head north.
Cross the train tracks, turn left, and enter the second building (the wider building).
Inside, you’ll find some stairs heading down into the Goldenrod Underground.
Descend the stairs and go south, then turn east at the earliest opportunity.
The blue door to the Underground Warehouse is at the end of this narrow passage. Use the Basement Key to open it and head inside.
Note: You might have to fight some trainers if you’ve never been here, but their Pokémon are all very low-level. They shouldn’t be a problem at this point in the game.
You’ll bump into your rival shortly after entering this area. He has five Pokémon in the Lv.28-32 range in his team, so be prepared!
Once that’s done, keep going left to the other side of the room.
Tip: Remember you can always return to the Pokémon Center to heal before continuing.
You’ll have to battle three Team Rocket Grunts with Normal and Poison-type Pokémon on the way. They shouldn’t be a problem compared to your rival.
There are three switches on the northern wall. Press them in order from left to right to open the correct way forward.
Tip: If you’ve already moved the switches around, you can exit the room and return for a reset.
From the top left corner of the map, head down, then right. Watch out for Burglar Eddie and his two Pokémon.
Then, go down and right once again.
Burglar Duncan has one more Pokémon than Eddie, but it’s nothing to worry about.
Finally, head to the right.
Defeat the Rocket Grunt here and enter the blue gate behind her.
Tip: There’s a Full Heal on the ground to the north right before the Rocket Grunt.
It’s a single road with no branches from here on out. Start by going north into the Warehouse.
Follow the road as it bends right and back down.
There’s an Ultra Ball in the top left corner of the U-Turn. Doesn’t hurt to pick it up!
Keep following the road as it turns right and then north.
Tip: Also pick up the Max Ether hidden next to some crates in the corner before heading north.
Next up is a staircase guarded by a Rocket Grunt. Go up the stairs to find the Amulet Coin on the ground.
How to Use the Amulet Coin
The Amulet Coin doubles your earnings from winning Pokémon battles against trainers.
To use it, just give it to a Pokémon to hold. Any battle they participate in will yield double the prize money.
If you don’t want to switch your Pokémon around all the time, just give the Amulet Coin to your party leader.
This item is fantastic when farming the Elite Four for money and experience. It takes your monetary earnings from each E4 run up to approximately 44,000 PokéDollars.
