You’ll get TM31 Mud-Slap as a reward for defeating Gym Leader Falkner in Violet City’s Gym.

The Violet Gym is open for business straight away once you arrive in Violet City. It’s the first Gym you’ll tackle on your adventure, so it shouldn’t be too hard to conquer.

Getting TM31 Mud-Slap (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Find the Violet Gym in the middle of Violet City. It’s directly to the right of the PokéMart.

Tip: You can catch Rock-type Pokémon like Geodude in the nearby Dark Cave (east of town). Alternatively, trade a Bellsprout for an Onix in the house left of the Pokémon Center.

Step 3: Defeat Gym Leader Falkner and claim TM31 Mud-Slap.

Much like the rest of the trainers in Violet Gym, Falkner’s team is made up of Normal/Flying-type Pokémon.

As such, some Rock-type moves and critters can make the fight much easier.

Falkner will grant you TM31 Mud-Slap as a reward after you shoot down his Flying-type team.

TM31 Mud-Slap Details + Uses

Mud-Slap Move Details
Type Ground
Category Physical
Power 20
Effect Lowers the target’s Accuracy slightly.
Accuracy 100%
PP 10

Mud-Slap is a strategic move whose value lies in its effect: diminishing the opponent’s Accuracy.

This can be fantastic when dealing with Pokémon who rely on high-Power, low-Accuracy moves with scarce PP such as DynamicPunch or Zap Cannon.

The minor damage-dealing potential is more relevant when teaching Mud-Slap to Pokémon to increase their type coverage.

Example: Flying-type Pokémon can use this Ground-type move to deal with Electric-type critters, which are naturally strong against Flying-types. Same goes for Water-type Pokémon.

Here are some Pokémon that could make great use of this TM and that can be caught relatively early in the game:

Pokémon Type Location
Pidgey Normal/Flying Routes 29, 30, 31 (Morning, Day).
Sandshrew Ground Union Cave (Morning, Day).
Poliwhirl Water Evolve Poliwag.
Geodude Rock/Ground Dark Cave, Union Cave.
