When used in battle, Hyper Beam forces the user to recharge. Therefore, after using Hyper Beam, the Pokémon won’t be able to move for a full turn.

Missing a full turn because of a single move is a major drawback. For this reason, Hyper Beam is a virtually useless move despite its massive base power.

Hype Beam is only slightly viable as a finishing move. A Special sweeper can use Hyper Beam to end a battle, which is the only way to bypass the recharge secondary effect. Even then, Hyper Beam will still take a move slot, making it an undesirable option.

One niche strategy for Hyper Beam would be teaching the move with one of the following abilities:

  • Aerilate: turns Normal-type moves into Flying-type moves.
  • Galvanize: turns Normal-type moves into Electric-type moves.
  • Pixilate: turns Normal-type moves into Fairy-type moves.
  • Refrigerate: turns Normal-type moves into Ice-type moves.

The abilities listed above will give Hyper Beam a different STAB. This strategy can turn Hyper Beam into a super effective move. However, these abilities won’t remove Hyper Beam’s recharge effect. You will still give your opponent a free turn afterwards.

Even taking these niche alternatives into consideration, you probably won’t be able to use Hyper Beam pragmatically – whether in PvP or in the main story.
