Sandstorm is a weather move, and will brew a sandstorm when used in battle.

Sandstorm will last for five turns. A Pokémon holding a Smooth Rock will extend sandstorm to eight turns.

While active, sandstorm will damage all Pokémon in battle for 6.25% of their maximum HP.

Ground, Rock and Steel-type Pokémon are immune to damage from sandstorm. Pokémon with the abilities Magic Guard, Overcoat, Sand Force, Sand Rush and Sand Rush are also immune. Likewise, Pokémon holding Safety Goggles won’t take damage from sandstorm.

While sandstorm is active, Rock-type Pokémon will have their Special Defense boosted by 50%.

In battle, sandstorm has the following move interactions:

  • Boosts Shore Up’s recovery to ⅔ of the Pokémon’s maximum HP.
  • Decreases the recovery of Moonlight, Morning Sun and Synthesis to 25% of the Pokémon maximum HP.
  • Halves the base power of Solar Beam and Solar Power.

Sandstorm will also interact with the following abilities in battle:

  • Sand Force will boost the power of Ground, Rock and Steel-type moves by 30%.
  • Sand Rush will double the Pokémon’s Speed stat while sandstorm is active.
  • Sand Veil will boost the Pokémon’s evasiveness by 80%.

Sandstorm teams are a common weather-based strategy. On the other hand, Sandstorm itself isn’t a very popular move option.

Most sandstorm teams will use a Pokémon with the ability Sand Stream as the primary weather setter.

A Pokémon with Sand Stream will brew a sandstorm immediately after entering the battle. Unlike Sandstorm, Sand Stream doesn’t require a full turn to set up.

That being said, Sandstorm can be a viable option in some cases. Sandstorm teams may choose to run a secondary setter as a backup plan in case the Sand Stream user goes down. In that specific case, the secondary setter will usually have Sandstorm in the moveset.
