Gym Puzzle Solution

You’ll need a Pokémon that can use Strength outside of battle to clear this Gym’s puzzle. Here’s how to solve it:

Go up the stairs to the left side of the Gym to reach the second floor (2F).

Have a Pokémon use Strength to push the boulders on 2F into pits that lead to the floor below (1F). You can do this by pressing A while facing the boulder and walking toward it to push it in that direction.

There are three pits in total, but only two are needed to reach Claire. You can drop them in any order.

Return to 1F through the center-right stairs and walk northward over the boulders to reach Clair.

Tips for Beating Clair

  • Level Up Your Party to Around Level 38: Clair’s Pokémon range from Level 37 to Level 40 and are fairly strong. Assuming you have a full party with some advantageous types, you’ll be fine at around Level 38. Level up to 40+ if your party is smaller.
  • Catch a Jynx in the Ice Path: Jynx’s Ice/Psychic-typing and Ice-type damage-dealing moves like Powder Snow and Ice Punch make it ideal to beat Clair’s Dragon-types.
  • Teach Your Pokémon TM16 Icy Wind: You got this TM after defeating Pryce in Mahogany Town. It’s a powerful Ice-type damage-dealing move that also reduces the target’s speed, making it invaluable against Dragonair.
  • Expect Healing: Clair has both a Full Restore and Full Heal, which she won’t hesitate to use. Don’t assume the fight is over if she hasn’t used these yet.

Facing the Dragon Shrine Trial

Normally, you’d get the badge and the TM after defeating the Gym Leader, but Clair wants you to pass a test at the Dragon’s Den first.

So you’ll need to go to the Dragon’s Den by surfing across the water behind the Gym.

Head to the western wall after walking in. Then, use Surf to enter the water and work your way south.

Follow the water and you’ll soon reach dry land. The Dragon Shrine is a couple steps to the right from the coast.
