2 Ice Path (B1F, B2F) from 6 PM to 4 AM. Held by 2% of wild Sneasel. Yes

You can get an early Quick Claw from a woman sitting on a bench with her Pokémon in the southeastern corner of the National Park. The National Park is north of Goldenrod City so you can head there immediately after you get your 2nd gym badge.

Alternatively, you can get more Quick Claws as held items on roughly 2% of wild Sneasel. You’ll find Sneasel in the Ice Path’s first and second basements (B1F, B2F) at night (6 PM to 4 AM).

Getting Quick Claws

Method #1: Lady at the National Park

Enter the National Park through the gate on Route 35, north of Goldenrod City. It’s the building with a police officer nearby.

Keep going right and above the flower garden. You’ll soon come across a green-clad woman sitting on a bench with a Pokémon (Persian).

Talk to her to get the Quick Claw.

Method #2: Held Item on Wild Sneasel

The only place to catch Sneasel in Pokémon Crystal is the Ice Path during the night (6 PM to 4 AM).

You’ll find the Ice Path east of Mahogany Town and north of Blackthorn City. We’ll guide you there from Blackthorn City.

Start by heading northeast of the Pokémon Center in Blackthorn City.

Keep heading northeast until you pass a house and a signpost, then continue northward.

You won’t find any Sneasel on the first level. Instead, you need to find a ladder leading to the basement. Luckily, there’s one just ahead.

Go north into the ice sheet, then slide left and north again to exit the ice again.

You’ll see a ladder that leads to the first basement (B1F).

Sneasel has a 1% encounter rate on this floor, which isn’t encouraging. If you want to find Sneasel more efficiently, we must descend one more floor.

Follow the road south of the ladder as it turns right.

You’ll find a sheet of slippery ice a few paces to the right. Go RIGHT, UP, RIGHT, UP on the ice to reach the platform above.

There’s a ladder leading further into the Ice Path to the left. Use it to reach B2F.

Sneasel has a 5% encounter rate on the second basement of the Ice Path. That means you should find one within your first 20 battles, probably earlier.

Once you find a Sneasel, use Thief to check for a Quick Claw. Alternatively, catch the Sneasel and check its held item slot manually.

Note: Only 2% of Sneasel carry the item, so don’t get discouraged if the first few Sneasel are empty. You’ll find a Quick Claw eventually.

Quick Claw Uses

The Quick Claw is a held item that increases the chances of your Pokémon moving first in battle by around 23%.

It only works if your Pokémon’s move is in the same priority range as your opponent’s.

Move Priority
Priority Moves
+2 Detect, Endure, Protect
+1 ExtremeSpeed, Mach Punch, Quick Attack
0 Other moves
-1 Counter, Mirror Coat, Roar, Whirlwind, Vital Throw

Example: Quick Attack will always go first vs. Tackle, but the Quick Claw can make Mach Punch 23% more likely to go before Quick Attack.
