You’ll find TM40 Defense Curl deep in the second floor of Mt. Mortar. The TM will be around the center of the room. Surf and Waterfall are both required to reach this area.
You’ll want to start at the middle entrance on Route 42 (connecting Ecruteak and Mahogany Town) and work your way up from there.
Prerequisites
TM40 Defense Curl is located in Mt. Mortar behind several bodies of water and a waterfall. To reach it, you need to:
- Get HM03 Surf at Ecruteak Dance Theater and teach it to a Pokémon.
- Defeat Gym Leader Morty at Ecruteak City so you can use Surf outside of battle.
- Get HM07 Waterfall in the Ice Path and teach it to a Pokémon.
- Defeat Gym Leader Pryce at Mahogany Town so you can use Waterfall outside of battle.
Once you’ve done all that, you’re ready to go pick up the Defense Curl TM.
Getting TM40 Defense Curl (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Enter Mt. Mortar from the middle entrance in Route 42. Here’s where to find it:
Starting from the Ecruteak right-hand exit, go right and use Surf upon reaching the coast to continue.
Surf towards the right and eventually you’ll find land again.
The entrance to Mt. Mortar is on this land mass, just a few paces right the coast.
Step 2: Once you’re inside, use Surf and head north. Then use Waterfall to climb up to 2F.
You’ll find the way to the next area by going around towards the right-hand corner in the back of a rocky platform.
Step 3: Once you enter the next area, go right and use surf on the water.
Follow the right edge of the water until you reach dry land again.
Then head north, going briefly back into some more water before coming out to the left.
Continue following the only available path until you come across another body of water to the north.
Use Surf to make your way up on the water, and then turn right onto a small strip of land.
Finally, go down this pathway to find a staircase leading to your TM on top of a platform.
Just head up the platform and pick up the item to get TM40 Defense Curl.

Defense Curl is a great protective move that slightly increases the user’s Defense. It also doubles the damage dealt by Rollout when used beforehand.
This makes it a must-have tool for tanky Pokémon looking to deal some damage by leveraging Rollout’s effect, which doubles its power every time it’s used consecutively.
Pokémon with high HP and Defense excel at employing this strategy.
