The Overheat TM on Victory Road's 3rd floor (Pokémon FireRed)
TM50 Overheat
# Location Repeatable?
1 Victory Road – Northwest corner of 3rd floor No

You will find TM50 Overheat on the ground on Victory Road’s 3rd floor. The TM is hidden in the northwest corner of this floor, so you’ll need to work through a few boulder puzzles to get to it.

And you won’t be able to enter Victory Road until you have all 8 Gym Badges. So this TM is only available in the later-game just before you challenge the Elite Four.

Overheat Move Details
Type Fire
Category Special
Power 140
Accuracy 90
PP 5

Overheat is the most powerful Fire-type move in FRLG, dishing out 140 base Power.

This kind of Power comes at a steep cost, though. Because using Overheat will lower the user’s Special Attack stat by two stages.

Since Overheat is a Special move, this reduction in Special Attack will affect the Power of the attack – along with the power of other Fire-type moves.

Below is a chart that displays how Special Attack is affected by stage.

Stage Stat Modifier
-1 x0.66
-2 x0.5
-3 x0.4
-4 x0.33
-5 x0.285
-6 x0.25

Using Overheat just one time in battle will decrease the user’s Special Attack by 50% – a huge drop off.

Because of this, the attack is best reserved as a last resort move. Or as the final move of a battle.

But generally, you might even be better off selling the TM for cash rather than using it. Since there are so many other powerful moves that don’t have drawbacks.

With that said, it can be fun to use in a playthrough if you’re curious about it.

Overheat can deliver one-hit K.O.s consistently, especially in the hands of a Fire-type. Thanks to STAB (Same-type attack bonus), Overheat’s attack gets boosted to 210 for the first hit.

It’s also worth mentioning that Overheat can’t be learned by any Pokémon via level-up in FireRed or LeafGreen, so this TM is the only way to access the move.
