1 | Victory Road – Northwest corner of 3rd floor | No |
You will find TM50 Overheat on the ground on Victory Road’s 3rd floor. The TM is hidden in the northwest corner of this floor, so you’ll need to work through a few boulder puzzles to get to it.
And you won’t be able to enter Victory Road until you have all 8 Gym Badges. So this TM is only available in the later-game just before you challenge the Elite Four.
TM50 Overheat Location (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Enter Victory Road at end of the Indigo Plateau.
Step 2: Now inside Victory Road, you’ll spot a large boulder ahead. Position yourself above the boulder.
Step 3: Use Strength on the boulder so that it can be moved.
Step 4: Push the boulder down one time to the south.
Step 5: From here, push the boulder again five times to the east.
Step 6: Now walk below the boulder and push it up two steps to the north This should have it resting up against the rocky wall above.
Step 7: Now that the boulder is against the wall, push it to the east until it reaches the next wall.
Step 8: From the eastern wall, push the boulder twice to the north.
Step 9: From here, push the boulder once to the east, and then push it down to land on top of the white button.
Step 10: With this button pushed, head west back towards the entrance.
Step 11: Keep west past the entrance and take the small steps ahead to get onto the elevated platform. Then travel east across the elevated path.
Step 12: The elevated platform eventually forks west and east. Take the path leading west and climb down the stairs on that side (left of the purple-haired NPC).
Step 13: Then head up from the bottom of the steps and climb the ladder ahead to the north.
Step 14: Now on the 2nd floor, head south towards the boulder ahead.
Step 15: Use HM04 Strength to make the boulder moveable.
Step 16: Using Strength, push the boulder two steps to the left.
Step 17: After moving the boulder west, push the boulder two times down to the south.
Step 18: Then finally, push the boulder twice to the west to cover the button.
Step 19: With this button now pressed, head north up the small staircase to get onto the elevated path.
Step 20: Walk east across the path, passing by the karate trainer.
Step 21: At the end of the path are two sets of steps. Take the steps on the far east near the blonde NPC.
Step 22: Walk towards the right and then follow this path along as it turns up to the north.
Step 23: Ahead to the north is a ladder. Climb up this ladder to reach the 3rd floor.
Step 24: Now on the 3rd floor, head northwest past the boulder.
Step 25: Ahead to the west you’ll spot some water leaking out of the rocky wall.
From here, veer south.
Step 26: You’ll find TM50 Overheat on the ground at the end of this passage.
TM50 Overheat Details + Uses
Overheat Move Details | |
---|---|
Type | Fire |
Category | Special |
Power | 140 |
Accuracy | 90 |
PP | 5 |
Overheat is the most powerful Fire-type move in FRLG, dishing out 140 base Power.
This kind of Power comes at a steep cost, though. Because using Overheat will lower the user’s Special Attack stat by two stages.
Since Overheat is a Special move, this reduction in Special Attack will affect the Power of the attack – along with the power of other Fire-type moves.
Below is a chart that displays how Special Attack is affected by stage.
Stage | Stat Modifier |
---|---|
-1 | x0.66 |
-2 | x0.5 |
-3 | x0.4 |
-4 | x0.33 |
-5 | x0.285 |
-6 | x0.25 |
Using Overheat just one time in battle will decrease the user’s Special Attack by 50% – a huge drop off.
Because of this, the attack is best reserved as a last resort move. Or as the final move of a battle.
But generally, you might even be better off selling the TM for cash rather than using it. Since there are so many other powerful moves that don’t have drawbacks.
With that said, it can be fun to use in a playthrough if you’re curious about it.
Overheat can deliver one-hit K.O.s consistently, especially in the hands of a Fire-type. Thanks to STAB (Same-type attack bonus), Overheat’s attack gets boosted to 210 for the first hit.
It’s also worth mentioning that Overheat can’t be learned by any Pokémon via level-up in FireRed or LeafGreen, so this TM is the only way to access the move.
