# Method Repeatable?
1 Rock Smash – Possible item drop Yes

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the only way to get Normal Gems is as a Rock Smash item from breakable rocks found throughout Hoenn.

Though you might also find other items and even encounter wild Pokémon when breaking rocks. However, you won’t be able to find a Normal Gem from rocks you break in Mirage Spots.

As you explore Hoenn, you’ll encounter various breakable rocks that obstruct your path. You can destroy these rocks by using HM06 Rock Smash.

When you use Rock Smash, you have the chance to find an item like the Normal Gem. You can also encounter wild Pokémon this way. However, the items and Pokémon you can find will depend on your current location.

The possible items you can find are based on whether you’re in the routes/caves of Hoenn or in a Mirage Spot. To find Normal Gems you’ll want to only break rocks within Hoenn.

The full list of obtainable items can be found in the table below:

What Do Normal Gems Do?

In-game details for Normal Gem

The Normal Gem is a held item that boosts the power of the holder’s first Normal-type move by 30%. Once used, the Normal Gem is consumed and disappears.

Since it’s a one-time use held item, the Normal Gem isn’t a reliable option for Pokémon looking to consistently increase their damage output. The Life Orb and Choice Items are usually better choices for most damage-dealers.

It only enhances Normal-type moves, making it quite restrictive.

However it can sometimes be used effectively by Normal-types who can unleash a powerful Normal-type STAB move such as Double-Edge or Explosion.

One excellent and niche use for the Normal Gem is to pair it with Pokémon with the Unburden ability, which doubles the Pokémon’s Speed when its held item is consumed.

For example:

Hitmonlee can use a Normal Gem-boosted Fake Out to pick off an opponent and boost its Speed with Unburden for the rest of the battle.

Other Pokémon that have Unburden as an ability are as follows:

Pokémon with Unburden Hidden Ability?
Hitmonlee Yes
Treecko / Grovyle / Sceptile Yes
Drifloon / Drifblim No
Purrloin / Liepard No
Accelgor Yes
Swirlix / Slurpuff Yes
