Red Orb Location
# Method Version
1 Sootopolis City – Gift from Team Magma Leader Maxie after battling Groudon in the Cave of Origin OR
2 Mt Pyre’s Summit – Gift from Elders after defeating Team Aqua Admin Matt AS

The Red Orb, which functions as Groudon’s Mega Stone, will be given to you at different points in the game depending on which version you’re playing.

In Omega Ruby, Maxie will give you the Red Orb in Sootopolis City after you battle Groudon in the Cave of Origin.

If you’re playing Alpha Sapphire, the Elders on Mt. Pyre’s summit will entrust you with the Red Orb after you defeat Team Aqua Admin Matt in a battle. This event happens some time after you obtain the sixth Gym Badge, but since Groudon isn’t available in this version, you might not be able to use it.

How does the Red Orb Work?

In-game details for the Red Orb / Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
In-game details for the Red Orb

Unlike in previous generations, the Red Orb in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is now classified as a Held Item, not a Key Item.

The Red Orb now works similarly to a Mega Stone, but not exactly the same.

When Groudon holds it, the item triggers its transformation into Primal Groudon as soon as it enters battle.

Also, it’s important to note that using the Red Orb to transform Groudon doesn’t count as your one allowed Mega Evolution in each battle. This means you can still use Mega Evolution on a different Pokemon in the same battle where the Red Orb was used.

Is Primal Groudon Worth Using?

Absolutely!

With its new form, Primal Groudon ranks among the most overpowered Pokémon in the game alongside Primal Kyogre and Mega Rayquaza.

In competitive battles where Legendary Pokémon are allowed, most winning teams use Primal Groudon or Primal Kyogre due to how valuable they are.

When Primal Reversion occurs, Groudon transforms into Primal Groudon and its base stats increase significantly.

Its typing also changes, Primal Groudon now becomes a Ground/Fire-type Pokémon.

And finally, it also gains an exclusive signature ability Desolate Land, which creates the Harsh Sunshine weather until it leaves the battle.

If you want to use Primal Groudon in your team, consider the following:

Pros:

Primal Groudon’s Versatility. Due to its high Attack and Special Attack, Primal Groudon can be a powerful Physical, Special, or Mixed attacker. Its extensive movepool coupled with solid defensive stats allow it to potentially KO most enemies and withstand any unboosted attack.

Desolate Land’s Utility. The Harsh Sunshine weather generated by Primal Groudon is similar to normal Sunshine. Uniquely, it cancels out Water-type attacks while it’s active. This effectively removes Primal Groudon’s 4x weakness to Water, leaving it with a single x2 weakness to Ground. Only the abilities of Primal Kyogre or Mega Rayquaza can alter or remove this weather effect.

Raw Power of Precipice Blades. Groudon’s new signature move, Precipice Blades, is essentially a more powerful, albeit less accurate, Earthquake. With even one use of Swords Dance, it has a good chance of wiping out your opponent’s entire team.

Primal Groudon as an Enabler for Sun Teams. In Double Battles, Primal Groudon is a great choice with Pokémon that benefit from the Harsh Sun weather. Fire-types and Grass-types with moves and abilities like Solar Beam or Chlorophyll are especially effective in this weather.

Cons:

Limited Use in Most Formats. While Primal Groudon doesn’t have any major weaknesses in battle, its use is often limited. In many battle rules and formats, a lot of Legendary Pokémon are usually banned. They’re not even permitted in the Super Singles/Doubles format in the Battle Maison.
