How To Get TM51 Steel Wing in Pokémon ORAS

Using Steel Wing in battle in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire

Steven will give you TM51 Steel Wing when you find him in Granite Cave, but only after you obtain the Knuckle Badge from Brawly in Dewford Town’s Gym. Granite Cave is located northwest of Dewford Town.

While you can only fully explore Granite Cave with a Mach Bike, you won’t need the bike to obtain TM51.

Steel Wing is a damage-dealing Steel-type move with a slight chance of boosting your Defense stat by one stage. Roughly one-in-ten uses of Steel Wing will boost your Defense.

Since most Pokémon that can learn it are Flying-type Pokémon, you can learn it as a coverage move for your Flying-type physical attackers. It’s especially useful during a typical playthrough, because it’s one of the better TMs you can obtain early in the game.

TM51 Steel Wing Location (Step-by-Step)

You can only enter Granite Cave through its entrance on Route 106, located northwest of Dewford Town.

In the cave, you can deliver the letter entrusted to you by Mr. Stone of the Devon Corporation to Steven. He’s located in the northernmost room of the cave’s ground floor.

Note: Granite Cave also has a deeper level you can explore, but you need a Mach Bike to traverse the muddly slopes underground. The Mach Bike is not required for TM51.

The room Steven is in features a mural depicting Kyogre/Ground (depending on which version you’re playing). After a brief cutscene, he will give you TM51 Steel Wing.

If you attempt to visit this room before defeating Brawly, a group of Ruin Maniacs will block the entrance. So make sure you already have the Knuckle Badge first.

Once you’re ready, start by heading to Dewford Town’s Pokémon Center:

TM51 Steel Wing is a Physical Steel-type move with a 10% chance of increasing the user’s Defense stat by one stage.

Each stat can be raised and lowered up to six times. Here’s how much each successful boost of Steel Wing modifies your own Defense stat:

Stage Main Stat
0 x1
1 x1.5
2 x2.0
3 x2.5
4 x3.0
5 x3.5
6 x4.0

Realistically, only one-in-ten uses of Steel Wing will boost your Defense. So it won’t be that consistent.

Raising your Defense will always be great against physical attackers.

Despite being a Steel-type move, Steel Wing is almost exclusively learned by Flying-type Pokémon. This gives Flying-type Pokémon some much-needed coverage against Rock-types, which they’re weak against.

However, Steel Wing only has a base power of 70 – which won’t be enough to knock out most Pokémon in one hit in competitive battles. In fact, the move even has a 10% chance of missing, making the move less viable.

But it can work fantastically well as an early-game TM in a regular playthrough.
