The Mauville City Gym is the third Gym in the Hoenn League. Wattson, the Mauville Gym Leader, specializes in Electric-type Pokémon alongside the trainers in his Gym. Upon defeating Wattson you’ll be rewarded with the Dynamo Badge and TM72 Volt Switch.

For a quick refresher, here’s the weaknesses and resistances of Electric-type Pokémon, and which Pokémon are vulnerable to Electric-type attacks:

To challenge Wattson you must first:

  • Obtain the second Gym Badge from Brawly, Dewford Town’s Gym Leader
  • Defeat rival Brendan/May on Route 110 to access Mauville City
  • Defeat rival Wally, who will be in front of the Gym when you first arrive, to gain access to the Gym

Tip: Stop by the Poké Mart to stock up on Super Potions. Additionally, consider buying Paralyze Heals or letting your Pokémon hold Cheri Berries to cure your Pokémon from paralysis, specifically from moves like Thunder Wave.

Mauville Gym Puzzle Solution (Step-by-Step)

The Mauville City Gym features an electric fence puzzle, where each path to the room’s exit is blocked by various electric currents.

Navigating through the puzzle requires you to step on colored switches on the floor. Each switch changes the corresponding current, which will eventually clear the path towards Gym Leader Wattson.

Step 1: From the entrance, head to the left side of the first floor to activate the first red switch on the floor. But you’ll need to battle Guitarist Kirk first.

Here are some tips and strategies to help you win this fight:

  • Use Ground-type Moves. As its only weakness, Ground-type moves like Geodude’s Magnitude can swiftly take down Wattson’s Electric-type Pokémon.
  • Utilize Ground-types’ Electric Immunity. No damage is dealt if Wattson’s Pokémon tries to use Electric-type moves on part-Ground-type Pokémon such as Geodude and Marshtomp (if Mudkip was your starter).
  • Counter Wattson’s Steel-types. Since Wattson’s Magnemite and Magneton are also part Steel, exploit this by using Pokémon strong against Steel-types. For instance, the Fighting-type Makuhita or the Fire-type Combusken (if Torchic was your starter) can be great teammates.
  • Weaken his Pokémon with Zigzagoon’s Mud Sport. Since there’s a lack of early-game Ground-types, you can also use Zigzagoon’s Mud Sport to weaken Wattson’s Electric-type moves. Mud Sport is a move that decreases the power of Electric-type moves by 50% for five turns.
  • Watch out for Volt Switch. Every Pokémon in Wattson’s team can learn Volt Switch, a move that allows the user to switch out while dealing damage. So, be careful using moves that might not be very effective on Wattson’s other Pokémon.
