There are four Weather Rocks that you can get in Pokémon ORAS: the Icy Rock, Smooth Rock, Heat Rock, and Damp Rock. You’ll get all of these rocks from the receptionist in the Weather Institute, which is a research building located in the northwest corner of Route 119.

After defeating Team Magma/Aqua in the Weather Institute, the receptionist at the front desk will start giving you one Weather Rock per day every time you visit.

These rocks are obtained in the following order:

  • Icy Rock
  • Smooth Rock
  • Heat Rock
  • Damp Rock

The Weather Rocks increase the duration of weather moves when held by a Pokémon in battle.

Prerequisites

Before you can obtain any of the rocks, you need to defeat Team Magma/Aqua in the Weather Institute. The first time you enter the building, you will face a handful of grunts and the Magma/Aqua Admin.

After defeating the Magma/Aqua Admin, you can speak to the receptionist to receive your first Weather Rock: the Icy Rock.

Additionally, one of the researchers will give you a Level 30 Castform after battling the Admin as a thank you. Castform changes its form whenever a weather move is in effect.

Each Weather Rock has their own prerequisite to obtain it, though. And they each relate to a specific weather move that they affect when held by a Pokémon in battle.

Here’s a table organizing all of them & how they work:

Item Affected Move Prerequisite
Icy Rock Hail After defeating Team Magma/Aqua or after receiving a Damp Rock
Smooth Rock Sandstorm After receiving an Icy Rock
Heat Rock Sunny Day After receiving a Smooth Rock
Damp Rock Rain Dance After receiving a Heat Rock

Simply return to the receptionist once a day for 4 days straight to get all four items.

How the Weather Rocks Work

Icy Rock

The Icy Rock is a held item that extends the duration of Hail to eight turns instead of five when used by the holder.

Hail summons a hailstorm that damages all Pokémon in battle except for Ice types.

Smooth Rock

The Smooth Rock extends the duration of Sandstorm to eight turns when used by the holder. When in effect, Sandstorm damages all Pokémon except Ground, Rock, and Steel types.

Heat Rock

The Heat Rock extends the duration of Sunny Day to eight turns when the move is used by the holder. Sunny Day powers up Fire-type moves and allows you to use Solar Beam without a recharge turn.

Damp Rock

The Damp Rock increases the duration of Rain Dance to eight turns when the move is used by the holder. Using Rain Dance summons a heavy rain, powering up Water-type moves.

Note: If a Pokémon holding a Weather Rock faints after casting a weather-changing move, the duration will still last for eight turns.
