1 Mt. Coronet—Received from Looker in front of the broken cave painting (requires Rock Climb, Strength, and Surf) No

You’ll get the Black Flute shortly after the Galactic HQ battle with Cyrus. As you pursue Team Galactic through Mt. Coronet, Looker will catch up to you and hand you the Flute automatically.

This happens late in the game after you’ve defeated Leader Candice at the Snowpoint City Gym.

Acquiring the Black Flute

Soon after defeating Leader Candice in Snowpoint City, you’ll travel to Galactic HQ in Veilstone City and fight Cyrus a second time.

Defeating him leads to Cyrus and several Galactic personnel taking off for Mt. Coronet.

Naturally, you’ll need to chase Cyrus and his henchmen down.

Reaching Mt. Coronet

This will be your first time climbing to the peak of Mt. Coronet, so stock up on healing items and Repels before you set out.

You’ll also need Pokémon that know the following Hidden Moves:

  • Rock Climb
  • Strength
  • Surf

The entrance to Mt. Coronet that you want to use is northeast of Oreburgh City, so Fly to the Oreburgh Pokémon Center and head north along the main road.

You’ll come to a hole in a cave wall that previously held up a cave painting.

As you approach it, Looker from the International Police will show up and stop you.

Looker will point out the devastation Team Galactic is causing, using the cave painting as an example. He will encourage you to pursue Team Galactic up the mountain and put a stop to their plans.

To help you on your way, Looker will hand you the Black Flute.

Black Flute Details and Uses

The Black Flute reduces wild Pokémon encounters by 50%. It has the opposite effect of the White Flute.

Unlike the Cleanse Tag, which reduces encounters only if held by the first Pokémon in the party, the Black Flute is used straight from the Bag.

The upside to the Black Flute is that it keeps you from needing to use a Pokémon’s held item slot.

However, the effect only lasts until the next map transition. And unlike with Key Items, you aren’t able to register the Black Flute to a hotkey for quick access.

This means you’ll need to open the menu to activate the Black Flute every time you change Routes, walk through a doorway, or go up or down a staircase in order to keep the effect going.

And by the time you acquire the Black Flute you’ll already have access to Max Repels—a far superior option to the Black Flute if you can afford to keep a steady supply of them.
