How To Get a DeepSeaTooth in Pokémon Platinum

Fishing in the Great Marsh in Pokémon Platinum

The only way to get a DeepSeaTooth in Pokémon Platinum is to find a wild Carvanha that’s holding one. Each wild Carvanha has a 5% chance to be holding a DeepSeaTooth, so it can take a little while to actually get this item.

Wild Carvanha only appear in Pastoria City’s Great Marsh.

And to find them you’ll need the Super Rod, meaning you won’t be able to obtain a DeepSeaTooth until after you’ve completed the main game.

Note: In Diamond and Pearl, wild Sharpedo can also be found holding DeepSeaTooths. But in Platinum this is not the case, so wild Carvanha is your only choice here.

Acquiring a DeepSeaTooth

To find a DeepSeaTooth, you will need to catch a Carvanha that has one in its held item slot.

Wild Carvanha are only found in Pastoria City’s Great Marsh, and can only be hooked using the Super Rod. This means you’ll have to wait until after you’ve received the National Pokédex to attempt this.

Once you have the Super Rod, Fly to Pastoria City and head east from the Pokémon Center.

Then turn northward to enter the Great Marsh.

The Great Marsh is Sinnoh’s Safari Zone, a designated park for finding rare Pokémon that aren’t located anywhere else.

Speak to the clerk at the counter and she will ask if you want to play the Great Marsh’s Safari Game for 500 Poké Dollars.

Agree to pay the fee in return for 30 Safari Balls and admission into the Marsh.

The Great Marsh is divided into six Areas, with Areas 5 and 6 being the closest to the entrance.

But unlike many of the Great Marsh’s Pokémon species, Carnvanha can be found in any of the Areas.

So just head toward any body of water and use the Super Rod to start fishing.

You won’t have to fish for long though.

With an encounter rate of 45%, Carvanha is the most abundant species you’ll find with the Super Rod here.

Unfortunately, finding a Carvanha with a DeepSeaTooth can be a frustrating experience.

Since you don’t send any of your Pokémon out during an encounter in the Great Marsh, the typical item farming Abilities are of no use here.

This is tricky since you can’t use Frisk—which identifies an opponent’s held item and relays that information to you.

Which means you’ll need to catch every Carvanha you come across just to find out if any are carrying the item.

Another problem is Carvanha’s item rate.

Each Carvanha you encounter has only a 5% chance of holding a DeepSeaTooth. If you’re very unlucky, you might end up with twenty or more Carvanha in your Boxes and not find a single DeepSeaTooth among them.

It’s recommended that you show up to the Marsh with five empty slots in your party—that way you can at least check the item slots of the first five Carvanha you catch without having to leave.

DeepSeaTooth Details and Uses

Uses In Battle

The DeepSeaTooth is a held item that doubles the Special Attack stat of the Clamperl holding it.

Like the Light Ball, the DeepSeaTooth would be a fantastic item if it wasn’t tied to such an otherwise useless Pokémon.

The DeepSeaTooth will give Clamperl a stratospheric base Special Attack of 148. But this Pokémon’s other stats are so low that it’s unlikely to remain in battle long enough to use it.

Uses Outside of Battle

Clamperl can evolve into one of two evolutions, depending on which item it’s holding when it’s traded to another trainer.

  • If Clamperl is holding a DeepSeaScale it will evolve into Gorebyss
  • If Clamperl is holding a DeepSeaTooth then it will evolve into Huntail

Once Clamperl gets traded to someone else while holding the DeepSeaTooth, it will evolve into Huntail. Then you can trade back.

Huntail vs. Gorebyss

Huntail is suited more for physical attacks, while Gorebyss is more of a special attack user.

Otherwise, both Pokémon’s base Special Defense, Defense, and Speed stats are exactly the same.

Neither Pokémon is going to astound anyone though.

Huntail and Gorebyss have good offenses and strong physical Defense stats, but their HP stats are lackluster and their Speed stats are particularly low.

However, if you can work either Pokémon into a team that uses Rain Dance to summon rainstorms, their shared Ability Swift Swim will double their Speed and make them much more viable in tougher battles.
