How To Get HM06 Rock Smash in Pokémon Platinum

Using Rock Smash inside a cave in Pokémon Platinum

You can obtain HM06 Rock Smash from a Hiker NPC standing just inside the entrance to Oreburgh Gate, located east of Route 203. You can pick up the HM as soon as you gain access to Oreburgh City.

However, you won’t be able to use it outside of battle until you receive the Coal Badge from Roark, Oreburgh’s gym leader—and you have to find him in the depths of Oreburgh Mines first.

Once you have received the Pokétch accessory from Jubilife City, head out the eastern entrance onto Route 203.

If this is your first time leaving town, your rival will immediately confront you and challenge you to a battle.

He only has a level 7 Starly and his level 9 starter Pokémon, the latter of which has no elemental attacks yet, so it’s an easy fight.

After the rival battle, heal at Jubilife City’s Pokémon Center and head back east until you reach Oreburgh Gate.

Note: If you chose Chimchar as your starter, it’s highly recommended that you catch a Budew before you enter the cave, and/or a Psyduck within the cave and start leveling them up. This will make your battle with Roark much easier.

As soon as you venture a few steps into Oreburgh Gate, a Hiker NPC will approach you, take pity on your new-ness, and offer you HM06 Rock Smash.

Using Rock Smash Outside of Battle

You’re almost ready to smash some rocks. First you’ll have to teach HM06 to one of your Pokémon.

Do this by opening your menu, selecting your Bag, scrolling over to the TMs & HMs tab, and selecting HM06 Rock Smash.

Then it will ask you to select a Pokémon to learn the move.

Very few Pokémon can learn Rock Smash at this stage in the game. They are:

  • Geodude
  • Onix
  • Machop
  • Bidoof
  • Turtwig
  • Chimchar

Note: It is not recommended to teach Rock Smash to a Pokémon you plan on bringing into battle often, such as a starter. It isn’t a very useful move in battle, and although HMs can be forgotten, it’s a bit of a process.

Once you teach it to a Pokémon in your party, what you need to do is find a breakable rock and smash it! To do this, face the rock, press A, and select “Yes” when asked if you would like to use Rock Smash.

Rock Smash will open up a few new areas of the map.

This includes the Ravaged Path on Route 204, which is north of Jubilife City, and leads to the next area in the game: Floaroma Town.
