Throughout the land of Sinnoh are NPCs known as Move Tutors, who will teach your Pokémon certain moves. Many of these moves are rare and/or especially powerful, making them worth seeking out.
Most (but not all) of the Move Tutors in the game require a combination of colored Shards as payment.
There are five Move Tutors in Pokémon Platinum:
Tutor | Location |
---|---|
Grandma Wilma | Route 210—In the northeastern corner of the northern (foggy) area, close to Dragon Tamer Patrick (requires Rock Climb and Defog) |
Ultimate Move Tutor | Route 228—Behind the pond close to the northeastern section (requires the National Pokédex) |
Shard Move Tutor #1 | Route 212—In the rainy area about halfway between Hearthome City and Pastoria City, close to Parasol Lady Alexa |
Shard Move Tutor #2 | Snowpoint City—In the northeastern corner of town |
Shard Move Tutor #3 | Survival Area—On the mountain directly north of town (requires Rock Climb) |
This guide provides detailed step-by-step directions on how to find each Move Tutor in the order that they can be found in the game, as well as list all of the Tutors’ learnable moves and their cost (if any).
Finding the Free Move Tutors
The free Move Tutors don’t require payment for their services, but they specialize in very narrow movesets and will only teach certain types or species of Pokémon.
There are two free Move Tutors in the game: Grandma Wilma and the Ultimate Move Tutor.
Grandma Wilma (Route 210)
Grandma Wilma is the first of the free Move Tutors you will be able to reach. You’ll find her on the northern (foggy) stretch of Route 210 that lies to the east of Celestic Town.
Finding Wilma requires Pokémon that know the Hidden Move Rock Climb, which means you won’t be able to visit her until after you defeat Leader Candice in Snowpoint City.
Tip: Bringing a Pokémon that can use Defog is also highly recommended.
Once you have Pokémon that know these moves in your party, Fly to Celestic Town and head through the entrance to the northeast.

Once you hit Route 210, the field will become choked with fog. Use Defog to blow it away and improve visibility.

Head downstairs and cross the bridge.

On the other side of the bridge, head for the next staircase to the southeast.

Climb the staircase and cross the bridge to the north.

Turn right to cross the next bridge.

Head for the ledge to the east and use Rock Climb to descend the rocky wall.

Cross the pit at the bottom and use Rock Climb to head up the rocky wall to the east.

From here you’ll need to defeat Dragon Tamer Patrick in battle.
Then enter the house to the northeast.

Grandma Wilma will be at the table in the middle of the room.

Moves Learned From Grandma Wilma
Grandma Wilma’s Move List | |||
---|---|---|---|
Move | Type | Category | Teachable Pokémon |
Draco Meteor | Dragon | Special | A Dragon-type Pokémon with a maximum (255) Friendship stat |
Grandma Wilma only teaches a single move, but it’s a good one: Draco Meteor.
Draco Meteor is a Dragon-type attack with an awesome base power of 140. The drawback is that it lowers the user’s Special Attack stat by two stages afterwards, so it’s best used as part of a strategy that can negate stat decreases (such as by switching the user in and out of battle).
Grandma Wilma will only teach Draco Meteor to a Dragon-type Pokémon whose Friendship stat is completely maxed at 255.
Note: Draco Meteor can also be taught to an Arceus holding a Draco Plate.
Ultimate Move Tutor (Route 228)
The second free Tutor is known as the Ultimate Move Tutor, and he is found close to the northeastern section of Route 228.
Note that Route 228 is one of the final areas of the game. So you won’t be able to reach the Ultimate Move Tutor until after you have obtained the National Pokédex upgrade.
To locate the Ultimate Move Tutor, start by heading to the Resort Area of the Battle Zone. Then cross the bridge to the north of the Pokémon Center.

On the other side of the pond, continue northward to leave the Resort Area and enter Route 229.

Where the trail splits at the Resort Area/Route 229 sign, head northward through the tall grass, past the two Ace Trainers.

Veer to the northwest and slip through the gap in the trees.

A sandstorm will flare up as Route 229 becomes Route 228.
Hug the eastern wall to maintain your course northward through the narrow canyons.

Continue heading north, ignoring muddy slopes and other distractions.

Keep going northward past the Ace Trainers.

Head north past the pond.

Take a right turn after passing the pond and enter the white house to the east.

The elderly Move Tutor will be standing to your left as you enter.

Moves Learned From the Ultimate Move Tutor

---|---|---|---|
Move | Type | Category | Teachable Pokémon |
Blast Burn | Fire | Special |
|
Hydro Cannon | Water | Special |
|
Frenzy Plant | Grass | Special |
|
The Ultimate Move Tutor will teach extraordinarily powerful Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type moves, but only to the highest evolution of starter Pokémon.
This includes starter Pokémon from previous Generations as well as the Gen IV starters.
Each of these Ultimate Moves has an astronomical base power of 150. However, they all require the Pokémon to spend a turn recharging after using them.
This drawback makes each of these moves most suitable as a last resort in battle.
Finding the Shard Move Tutors
The non-free Move Tutors—sometimes called the Shard Move Tutors—will teach your Pokémon moves in exchange for eight colored Shards each.
There are 4 Shard colors in Pokémon Platinum:
- Red
- Green
- Blue
- Yellow
Each move you can learn from these tutors requires a different combination of these Shards, so it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for the various types throughout the game.
Tip: Shards can be acquired in a variety of ways—most dependably in the Underground.
The Shard Move Tutors have a more expansive list of moves than the Free Move Tutors do, and of a much wider variety as well.
Shard Move Tutor #1 (Route 212)
The first Shard Move Tutor you can find is in the rainy section of Route 212. They’re in a house about halfway between Pastoria City and Hearthome City.
You’ll be able to meet this Move Tutor at any time after defeating Hearthome Gym’s Leader Fantina for the Relic Badge.
The easiest way to reach this Move Tutor’s house is to start in Pastoria City and head south from the Pokémon Center.

Move southward through the town until you reach the Poké Mart.

Take a left at the Poké Mart to start heading out of town.

Head south by the Pastoria City sign.

Then head west to enter the marshland on Route 212.

If you look closely at the swamp, you will notice that some areas are more lightly shaded than others. You can avoid getting stuck in the bog by keeping to just walking on these lighter areas.
The simplest route through this area is to head for the treeline to the south and move west in a straight line.

Then head over to the westernmost hill and use the staircases to climb over it & carry on moving north onto the other side.

Once you walk a few paces up past the hill you should enter the house you see on the other side, directly northwest of Parasol Lady Alexa.

The first Shard Move Tutor will be standing in the middle of the room wearing a brown hat.

Shard Move Tutor #2 (Snowpoint City)
The second Shard Move Tutor you can find is in Snowpoint City.
You won’t be able to find this Move Tutor without first defeating Leader Byron at the Canalave City Gym, since your first visit to Snowpoint City requires the Hidden Move Strength.
Thankfully, this tutor is easy to find once you’re in the city.
Start by heading north from the Snowpoint Pokémon Center.

Continue north past the Snowpoint City Gym.

Then just enter the house at the northeastern corner of town.

The Move Tutor will be standing in front of the laptop in the corner of the house.

Shard Move Tutor #3 (Survival Area)
The final Shard Move Tutor in the game is in the Survival Area.
This small town is in the northwestern corner of the Battle Zone, so you won’t have access to this Tutor until you’ve obtained the National Pokédex after the end of the main story.
You will also need a Pokémon with Rock Climb with you in order to reach him.
To find this Move Tutor, start by heading eastward from the Survival Area’s Pokémon Center.

Then turn north and venture into the grassy area.

Use Rock Climb at the rocky wall of the mountain to the north.

Once you’ve climbed up, turn left and head along the mountain ledge.

You’ll find the Move Tutor’s house at a dead end down this pathway.

The Move Tutor will be standing in front of the laptop inside this house.
