Category | Special |
Power | 120 |
Accuracy | 100 |

Despite its 120 base power, Solar Beam carries a major downside. The user must charge for a full turn before being able to unleash the move.
On the other hand, when used under harsh sunlight, Solar Beam can be cast instantly. Because of this, Solar Beam is a staple for Sunny Day-based teams.
Tip: Pokémon holding a Power Herb can also use Solar Beam instantly, without having to charge for a full turn. However, the Power Herb will be consumed after that. In this case, Solar Beam effectively becomes a single usage move.
In competitive play, Solar Beam isn’t used outside of Sunny Day teams. Taking a full turn to charge outside of harsh sunlight is too much of a drawback. A Power Herb won’t make up for it either, as this held item can only be used once in battle. Energy Ball is the better alternative as a Special Grass type move.
And Solar Beam isn’t a good option for the main story either, unless you decide to use a Sunny Day team. The move only becomes available towards the end of the game. You will also be able to obtain the TM for Energy Ball around the same time Solar Beam becomes available.
