Torment is a Dark-type Status move that’s fairly popular in competitive play. The attack is mostly used as a counter against players that use Choice items.

Choice items, when held by a Pokémon, provide the user with a stat boost that varies depending on the item. But each Choice item also forces the holder to remain locked-into using only one move in the battle.

Because Torment prevents two consecutive uses of the same move, any target holding a Choice item is forced to alternate between their one move and Struggle.

This throws a serious wrench in the strategy of Choice item players.

The downside to Torment is that its effect doesn’t follow its target. Once the affected Pokémon is switched out of battle, it is no longer subjected to Torment.

That being said, forcing your opponent to switch in the middle of battle will almost always give you a free turn.

Is Torment Worth Using?

In competitive play it can definitely be worth using.

But for a typical single-player game of Black or White, the move won’t have too many situations where it would really be useful.

The move can be useful against some NPCs who have Pokémon that might spam overly-aggressive moves (even without a Choice item). But it’s still a fairly specific use case that likely won’t make or break your team in a playthrough.
