Pokémon Black and White were the first games to remove Rock Smash’s status as a necessary move.

In previous Generations, Rock Smash was used to remove rocks blocking a player’s path. Now that it’s a battle-only move in Gen V, it no longer holds any value.

With a base Power of only 40, Rock Smash is one of the worst battle moves available.

It does have the ability to reduce your opponent’s defense by one stage, but this effect only works 50% of the time.

Because Rock Smash is found very early on in your journey, you may get some use out of it temporarily. For example, it can be used effectively against Nacrene City’s Gym Leader Lenora and her Normal-type Pokémon.

But Rock Smash should be retired from your moveset soon after that & replaced with some better options.
