You can get your earliest Exp. Share from Mr. Pokémon in exchange for the Red Scale that you get from the Red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage. Mr. Pokémon’s house is on Route 30, north of Cherrygrove City.

But more Exp. Shares are also available as rewards from the Lucky Number Show on the Johto Radio Station Channel 8.5.

Prerequisites

You’ll need to get the Red Scale before talking to Mr. Pokémon for the Exp. Share.

To do this, you must:

  1. Get HM03 Surf in the Ecruteak Dance Theater.
  2. Defeat Gym Leader Morty in Ecruteak City so you can use it outside of battle.
  3. Defeat or catch the Red Gyarados in the Lake of Rage north of Mahogany Town.

You’ll get the Red Scale right after the fight with the Red Gyarados is over.

You can also get an Exp. Share by winning the Lucky Number radio show broadcast on Channel 8.5 of your PokéGear Radio.

The condition to win the Lucky Number raffle is having a Pokémon in your party or storage whose Original Trainer Number partially matches the Lucky Number.

Specifically, you need three numbers to match to get the Exp. Share.

The Lucky Number is broadcast daily on the Lucky Channel (8.5). It changes every Friday, giving you another chance to win.

You can check a Pokémon’s OT number on the third tab of their Stats screen.

If you feel like you might have won, visit the lobby of the Goldenrod Radio Tower and talk to the well-dressed man near the middle of the counter.

He’ll give you the Exp. Share if one of your Pokémon meets the requirements.

Exp. Share Behavior

The Exp. Share is a held item that splits incoming EXP points between the Pokémon who participated in the battle and the holder.

Note: If there are multiple Exp. Share holders, 50% of the total EXP is split evenly between them.

The remaining 50% is split the same way between all the Pokémon who participated in the battle.

And any Pokémon who participates in a battle where they also held an Exp. Share would get EXP through both channels.
