Where To Get HM01 Cut in Pokémon Crystal

You will receive HM01 Cut as a reward for helping the Charcoal Kiln apprentice from Azalea Town catch a runaway Farfetch’d in Ilex Forest.

You can do this right after rescuing Azalea Town’s Slowpokes from Team Rocket.

But to use Cut outside of battle you’ll need to first defeat Bugsy at the Azalea Town Gym.

Getting HM01 Cut (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Walk to the Ilex Forest entrance west of Azalea Town.

Step 2: You’ll need to then defeat your rival in a quick battle, but after that you’ll be able to enter Ilex Forest.

For the rival fight, his first two Pokémon for this battle are always the same:

Then depending on what starter you picked, he’ll also have one of these Pokémon:

He should be somewhat easy to beat. But if you’re struggling then you can grind a few levels in Union Cave.

Step 3: Once you’re inside the forest, follow the only available path until bumping into the Charcoal Kiln’s apprentice next to a small tree.

Step 4: Continue following the path along to find the missing Farfetch’d and talk to it.

When you speak to this Farfetch’d it will always run away, and it’ll always move in the opposite direction from where you’re standing. Keep this in mind while working through this puzzle.

After you speak to it once it will run further into the forest.

Step 5: Turn right and follow the path up & around to circle around the Farfetch’d.

Keep hugging the trees to your left as you go up and around, and you’ll eventually reach Farfetch’d from the other side (you should be facing down).

Talk to it again to start chasing it back to its trainer.

Step 6: Follow Farfetch’d down and talk to it again. Make sure you are facing down again at this point.

It’ll run a couple of paces down from here.

Step 7: Follow Farfetch’d and talk to it again, but this time make sure you’re facing left (pictured below).

This will send the bird running back to the Charcoal Kiln master and apprentice.

Step 8: Now that Farfetch’d is back with the Charcoal Kiln master, you can talk to them and you’ll receive HM01 Cut as a reward.

HM01 Cut Details + Uses

Teaching Cut to a Pokémon allows you to cut down small trees blocking your way in the overworld. This is great, because you need to cut down a tree to cross Ilex Forest and progress the storyline.

Note: You must defeat Gym Leader Bugsy in Azalea Town before you can use Cut outside of battle.

It’s also a decent Normal-type move in the early game, but not good enough to teach it to your starter Pokémon or other powerhouses.

Tip: Visit the Move Deleter in Blackthorn City if you ever want to remove a Hidden Machine move like Cut from a Pokémon’s movelist.
