Where To Get the Choice Scarf in Pokémon HGSS

The Choice Scarf item in Pokémon HeartGold

There are two reliable methods of obtaining Choice Scarves in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver:

  1. You can purchase them from the Trainer Item stall in the Battle Frontier for 48 Battle Points.
  2. Your mom could randomly purchase one for you after saving enough money. (Once-only)

We’ll cover the details for both of these methods below.

Obtaining a Choice Scarf (Both Methods)

Method 1: Getting A Delivery From Mom

The first method involves some RNG, but it allows you to obtain a Choice Scarf without needing to beat the base game first.

At the start of the game, your Mom will ask if you want her to save some money for you. If you agree, she will keep a portion of all your battle winnings towards your savings.

Once you’ve reached a threshold of approximately 10000 PokéDollars in savings, she will randomly start calling you after trainer battles.

Tip: If you started saving up later in the game, you can go back to your house to directly deposit money to your mom so you can reach the ₱10000 balance quicker.

When you answer her call, she will inform you that she spent some of your money on items that she thinks you will need. One of the items that she will randomly purchase for you is the Choice Scarf.

After receiving the call, you can head to any PokéMart.

A deliveryman will be present next to the store counter.

Upon talking to the deliveryman, he will give you any of the following items:

SCROLL
Item Qty. Repeatable? Effect
Berry (Random) 5 Yes When held, reduces the effect of a certain type of super-effective move or halves the damage of a Normal-type move.
Super Potion 1 Twice Restores 50 HP to a Pokémon.
Choice Scarf 1 No Increases the holder’s base speed by 1.5x but only allows the use of one move.
Focus Sash 1 No The holder can survive a KO from full HP once.
Hyper Potion 1 No Restores 200 HP to a Pokémon.
Moon Stone 1 No Used to evolve certain species of Pokémon.
Muscle Band 1 No Increases the power of the holder’s physical moves by 10%.
Repel 1 No Prevents wild encounters with weak Pokémon for 100 steps.
Silk Scarf 1 No Boosts the holder’s Normal-type moves by 20%, but also increases confusion damage by 20%.

The deliveryman will give you the packages one at a time every time you interact with them.

Your mom will sometimes purchase multiple items at once, so you should keep talking to them until they say they don’t have any more packages for you.

Note: The deliveryman will only keep 5 packages at any given time. If his inventory is full, your mom will not purchase any more items for you until his stock is cleared.

Method 2: Purchasing From The Battle Frontier Stalls

You may use this method if you need more than one Choice Scarf, but it is only available after beating the game.

First, head to the Battle Frontier.

You can Fly there directly, but if you have not yet discovered it, you can Fly to Olivine City and then head west to Route 40.

The entrance at Route 40 leads to an intermediary area called the Frontier Access, which links Route 40 to the Battle Frontier proper.

Enter and continue heading north of the Frontier Access to get to the Battle Frontier.

The Battle Frontier Entrance has three stalls. Two of those sell useful items, including the Choice Scarf. However, they require BP or Battle Points to redeem.

Battle Points are acquired by participating in the Battle Frontier Challenges. Once you accrue 48BP, you can redeem those points for a Choice Scarf.

Choice Scarf Uses

The Choice Scarf is an item that boosts the base Speed stat of the Pokémon holding it by 50%, but limits the user to only the first move selected during battle. This boost will stack with other speed buffs multiplicatively.

This item is usually used to give fragile but powerful Pokémon a better chance of moving first during battle.

But it can also be used to lock enemies into bad situations by giving them the item through moves like Trick or Switcheroo.
