To challenge Brawly at the Dewford Gym, you must first:

  • Obtain the first Gym Badge from Roxanne, Rustboro City’s Gym Leader
  • Receive the Letter Key Item from Mr. Stone of the Devon Corporation
  • Rescue Peeko in Rusturf Tunnel to unlock Mr. Briney’s ship so you can sail to Dewford Town

Tip: Consider stopping by the Pokémon Mart to stock up on Potions too. You can also let your Pokémon hold healing berries, such as Oran Berries, which can heal them in a pinch.

Dewford Gym Puzzle Solution (Step-by-Step)

The Dewford Town Gym’s puzzle features a pitch-black maze with several paths to navigate. To solve it, you must defeat the Gym Trainers in the main path to access the buttons that can temporarily light up the side paths.

You’ll also need to remember the correct path, as you will need to walk in the dark to reach the next section of the main path. Eventually you’ll reach the Gym Leader Brawly.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to complete the gym puzzle:

Step 1: From the entrance, head north on the main path and you’ll find Battle Girl Laura. Defeat her in a battle to proceed.

Here are some tips and strategies to help you win this fight:

  • Exploit weaknesses with Psychic or Flying-type moves. You can defeat Brawly’s Fighting-type Pokémon more easily by using Super Effective moves like Confusion or Wing Attack.
  • Avoid using Dark, Ice, Normal, Rock, Steel-type Pokémon. His Machop’s Karate Chop and Makuhita’s Arm Thrust are especially dangerous to these types after a Bulk Up, as they can deal a lot of damage.
  • Don’t let Brawly set up with Bulk Up. Bulk Up is a move that boosts the user’s Attack and Defense stats. Defeat Brawly’s Pokémon before they use Bulk Up too many times, or they might sweep your team.
  • Use Special-based moves. Brawly’s Pokémon may use Bulk Up to boost their Attack and Defense, making it harder to defeat them with Physical moves alone.
  • Refrain from inflicting Status Conditions. Both Machop and Makuhita have the ability Guts, which significantly boosts their Attack if they’re burned, paralyzed, or poisoned. It may be more strategic to avoid causing these status conditions.
