Prerequisites
To challenge Flannery you must first:
- Obtain the third Gym Badge from Wattson, Mauville City’s Gym Leader
- Defeat Team Aqua/Magma on Mt. Chimney to gain access to Lavaridge Town
Tip: Consider stopping by the Pokémon Herb Shop next door to the Gym. They sell cheap and efficient healing items like the Energy Root and Revival Herb. Just remember, using these bitter medicines will make your Pokémon less friendly.
Lavaridge Gym Puzzle Solution (Step-by-Step)
The Lavaridge Town Gym features a hot spring-themed maze involving wooden platforms that shoot out steaming geysers. By stepping on these platforms, you can move between the upper and lower levels of the gym.
Use this mechanism to navigate through the maze and find the wooden platform that leads to where Flannery is.
And as always, many trainers are placed all over the Gym to slow you down on your way to Flannery.
Following these steps will guide you correctly through the Gym’s maze.
Step 1: Start by going straight from the entrance and taking the first wooden platform down to the Gym’s lower level.
Step 2: On the lower level, immediately step on the platform to your right.
Step 3: Back up top, defeat Kindler Cole and then step on the platform ahead.

Here are some tips and strategies to help you win this fight:
- Use Water and Ground-type Moves. With Flannery’s Fire-type team, Water and Ground-type moves, like Azumarill’s Bubblebeam and Sandslash’s Magnitude can be incredibly effective against her Pokémon. Rock-types also work as well.
- Change the Weather. Every member of Flannery’s team can use Sunny Day to boost the power of Overheat. Neutralize this by having Pokémon like Azumarill and Sandslash set up their own weather moves, such as Rain Dance or Sandstorm. Replacing the weather can shut down her entire strategy for this battle.
- Beware of Sunny Day’s Effect on Water-type Moves. If Sunny Day is active, the damage of Water-type moves will be halved. This can make Rock and Ground types more useful if you don’t have a Pokémon capable of changing the weather.
- Resist Overheat with high Sp. Def Pokémon. Overheat’s damage decreases with each use. So, Pokémon with high Special Defense, like Gyarados, can effectively tank Overheat, particularly as it won’t be super effective against it. Eventually, Overheat will barely deal any damage.
- Use Special Attacks against Torkoal. Torkoal’s extremely high Defense can make it difficult to defeat, even with super effective physical attacks. Special-based moves will be more effective.
