  • Gain access to Rustboro City using its south entrance on Route 104

Rustboro Gym Puzzle Solution (Step-by-Step)

Being the first Gym in the game, the layout of Rustboro City Gym is simple. It’s a maze with trainers strategically placed throughout. You can even avoid the trainers by taking a slightly longer path.

Whether you fight them or not, you will eventually reach Roxanne at the end of the maze.

Tip: While it’s faster to avoid the Gym trainers in this Gym, it’s best to defeat all trainers to earn more EXP for your team.

Step 1: Head north from the entrance to battle Youngster Josh. Defeat him, then turn left at the corner ahead.

Here are some tips and strategies to help you win this fight:

  • Exploit weaknesses with Water and Grass-type moves. Super Effective moves like Water Gun or Absorb can help you defeat Roxanne’s Rock-type Pokémon with ease. This battle is especially easy if you chose Mudkip or Treecko as your starter.
  • Avoid using Bug, Fire, or Flying-type Pokémon. Geodude and Nosepass can both use Rock Tomb, which might pose a threat to Pokémon like Wurmple, Torchic, or Taillow.
  • Use Special-based moves. Both Roxanne’s Pokémon can use moves that increase their Defense stat. It might make them harder to defeat with Physical moves, especially if you’re underleveled.
  • Beware of Rock Tomb’s Speed reduction. Rock Tomb is an attack that also lowers the target’s Speed. One or two uses of Rock Tomb can easily make Roxanne’s Pokémon faster than yours.
  • Take into account Geodude’s Sturdy. With Sturdy, Geodude can survive a powerful attack when it’s at full health, leaving it with just 1 HP. This might catch you off guard if you weren’t expecting it. Additionally, Roxanne often heals Geodude with a Potion right after.
