What Are Honey Trees?
Honey Trees are peculiar trees that can be used to attract certain species of wild Pokémon. Honey Trees are easy to spot, with their golden foliage and natural tendency to grow apart from other flora, and they’re found all over the Sinnoh region.
If you slather Honey onto a Honey Tree and return between six to twenty-four hours later, you will likely start a wild Pokémon encounter if you examine the tree.
Honey Trees are the only places to find certain species of Pokémon in Platinum, including Munchlax, Heracross, and Burmy’s Plant Cloak form.
Getting Honey
You’ll get your first Honey in Floaroma Town after driving Team Galactic out of the Floaroma Meadow; as a reward for defeating the two Galactic Grunts in battle, the Honey seller they were harassing will give you 10 free jars of his famous bee juice.
Afterward, you can buy Honey from this man at any time for 100p each (or 10 jars for 1000p).
You’ll also get a free Honey every time you catch a Combee, as well as when a Combee’s Honey Gather Ability successfully activates.
Attracting Pokémon to a Honey Tree
When you’ve got Honey in your inventory, you can easily apply it to a Honey Tree by approaching the tree and pressing A, then selecting “Yes” when prompted to slather the Tree’s bark with Honey.
Then it’s time to wait.
If you return to the Honey Tree after six in-game hours have passed, you’ll usually be able to examine the tree to find a wild Pokémon.
Just don’t wait too long to check on your traps: if you don’t return to a Honey Tree within 24 hours of slathering Honey on it, you’ll lose both the Honey and any Pokémon that might have been seduced by it.
Munchlax Trees
The most painful aspect about Honey Trees is using them to find Munchlax, Snorlax’s pre-evolved form.
Of the 21 Honey Trees in the game, Munchlax can only be found in four of them (we’ll call these “Munchlax Trees”), and you’re not explicitly told which four.
This is also the only way you can find Munchlax in the game – especially since there are no wild Snorlaxes to catch and breed.
If you’re thinking you’ll just slather Honey on every Honey Tree and eventually find a Munchlax that way, there’s another problem:
Even in Munchlax Trees, Munchlax’s encounter rate is 1%.
Imagine using Honey 100 times or more on one tree, waiting at least six hours between every use, and still not finding the one Pokémon you’re looking for. Now imagine doing that for twenty-one trees.
This interminable process makes Munchlax one of the hardest Pokémon in the game to catch.
Thankfully, there are ways of finding out the locations of your Munchlax Trees without spending 600 hours searching randomly.
Finding Out Two Munchlax Tree Locations
The locations of all four of your game’s Munchlax Trees depend on two numbers:
- Your Trainer ID
- Your Secret ID
Two Munchlax Trees are determined by your Trainer ID, which is easy enough to find: just check your Trainer Card from the menu.
The other two Munchlax Tree locations are determined by your Secret ID: an unseen set of numbers that helps differentiate between two players who may have been assigned the same Trainer ID number.
Secret IDs are far more difficult to figure out than Trainer IDs, so this section will focus on locating the two Trainer ID-dependent Munchlax Trees.
To find these two trees, take your 5-digit Trainer ID and run it through the following processes (Munchlax Tree 1 and Munchlax Tree 2) to get two final results, then look those results up in the table below to find out which two Honey Trees are Munchlax Trees.
Note: If the calculations of any of your Munchlax Trees (using Secret ID or Trainer ID) fall on the same number, the game will automatically add to the other Tree numbers in increments of 1 until no number is the same. Because of this, it might be a good idea to slather Honey on the next Honey Tree or two on the list.
Munchlax Tree 1
- Take the 5-digit Trainer ID found on your Trainer Card—for this example, we’ll use “41395”
- Divide your Trainer ID by 256 using integer division (ignoring all remainders):
[41395 / 256=161]
- Multiply the result (161) by the divisor (256):
[161*256=41216]
- Subtract the result (41216) from the dividend (41395):
[41395-41216=179]
- Divide the result (179) by 21 using integer division:
[179 / 21=8]
- Multiply the result (8) by the divisor (21):
[8*21=168]
- Subtract the result (168) from the dividend (179):
[179-168=11]
- Take the result (11) and search for the corresponding Honey Tree from the table below; a final result of 11 means that the Honey Tree on Route 213 should be a Munchlax tree.
Munchlax Tree 2
- Take the 5-digit Trainer ID found on your Trainer Card—for this example, we’ll use “41395”
- Divide your Trainer ID by 256 using integer division:
[41395 / 256=161]
- Divide the result (161) by 21 using integer division:
[161 / 21=7]
- Multiply the result (7) by the divisor (21):
[7*21=147]
- Subtract the result (147) from the dividend (161):
[161-147=14]
- Take the result (14) and search for the corresponding Honey Tree from the table below; a final result of 14 means that the Honey Tree on Route 218 should be a Munchlax Tree.
