The only copy of TM39 Rock Tomb is located in the Ravaged Path, which is north of Jubilife City. You can access it via Route 204.

To pick up TM39 you’ll also need Rock Smash, so you can only access the TM after defeating Oreburgh City’s Gym Leader Roark for the Coal Badge.

TM39 Rock Tomb is located on the Ravaged Path, a cave found north of Jubilife City that bisects Route 204. To pass through it, two requirements must be met:

  1. You must have defeated Gym Leader Roark in Oreburgh City and received the Coal Badge.
  2. You must have taught a Pokémon the Hidden Move Rock Smash using HM06 which you received from the Hiker NPC inside Oreburgh Gate.

Once you have a Pokémon that knows Rock Smash in your party, head north on Jubilife City’s central street.

Inside the Ravaged Path, go left at the split.

It’s blockaded by a breakable rock, so you’ll have to use Rock Smash in order to pass through.

In-game description of TM39 Rock Tomb.

Rock Tomb is a Rock-type physical attack move that encases the target Pokémon in boulders to lower its Speed stat.

Type Rock
Category Physical
Power 50
Accuracy 80%
PP 15 (max. 24)

Rock Tomb’s Speed-lowering effect can be a significant equalizer for Rock-type Pokémon, which tend to be slower than other types. But whether or not this makes up for its lower accuracy and mediocre base power largely depends on the individual battle.

Tip: In a Pokémon Contest, if Rock Tomb is used as the second move after Rock Throw, the user will gain 3 bonus appeal points.
