FFXIV Malikah’s Well: How To Unlock + Dungeon Guide

To unlock the Level 77 dungeon Malikah’s Well, you need to accept the Level 77 MSQ “A Fresh Start” from Ryne in Amh Araeng (X:15.8, Y:29.1). This MSQ is part of the patch 5.0 Main Scenario Questline for the Shadowbringers expansion.

In this guide we’ll explain how to clear the unlocking quest, and we’ll include all the boss mechanics from this dungeon along with all of their loot drops.

Unlocking Quest: A Fresh Start

The Level 77 MSQ “A Fresh Start” is part of the patch 5.0 main storyline for the Shadowbringers expansion. You’ll need to finish every MSQ leading up to it before it can be unlocked, including every MSQ from A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood.

After that, speak with Ryne in Amh Araeng (X:15.8, Y:29.1) to begin.

Your quest to vanquish the lightwardens in Norvrandt continues, with the lightwarden of Amh Araeng next on the list.

Ryne is eager to continue helping the scions and already feels the presence of the lightwarden deep inside Malikah’s Well.

Y’shtola explains that the well was built in the name of an ancient king of Nabaath Areng and was used as a vacation spot to escape the desert heat.

The well has since been converted into an excavation site after the flood, making it a perfect hiding place for the lightwarden.

After the cutscene, head to Amh Araeng (X:11.3, Y:31.2) and investigate the destination point.

Ryne will confirm the presence of the lightwarden, and Malikah’s Well will be unlocked. This dungeon requires at least a Level 77 Disciple of War or Magic job and an average item level of 385 to enter.

Boss #1: Greater Armadillo

Whenever the boss slams the ground with any of its skills, two sets of four ground circle AoEs will also appear.

Mechanics

  • Stone Flail: A red tankbuster marker on the primary target.
  • Head Toss: A stack marker on a random player. Stand inside the marker to share incoming damage.
  • Right Round: Immediately after “Head Toss,” the boss will jump toward the direction of the stack marker and use a non-telegraphed, point-blank AoE that knocks players back.
  • Flail Smash + Earthshake: A proximity marker in the middle followed by a room-wide donut AoE that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds. Run away from the proximity marker, then move back to the center immediately after.
  • Pack Armadillo: Smaller armadillos that must be killed immediately to reduce incoming damage.
  • Deep Draught (Pack Armadillo): A “Damage Up” buff for 30 seconds.

Boss #2: Amphibious Talos

Mechanics

  • Efface: A red tankbuster marker on the primary target.
  • Wellbore: A massive point-blank AoE attack that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Geyser Eruption: Immediately after “Wellbore,” four ground AoEs will appear, applying stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuffs for 60 seconds to anyone hit. Then, large geysers will spawn on top of the AoEs, applying a “Soaking Wet” debuff that reduces your movement speed and a dispellable “Dropsy” DoT for 20 seconds.
  • High Pressure: During “Geyser Eruption,” the boss will cast a room-wide knockback AoE. Heal through the damage and avoid getting knocked into the AoEs. Use knockback-immunity skills if necessary.
  • Swift Spill: The boss will prepare to fire non-telegraphed frontal cone AoEs in a circular direction. Each frontal cone will knock players back and apply a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds. Identify which side the boss will spin and dodge accordingly.

Mechanics

  • Intestinal Crank: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Heretic Fork: Large column AoEs toward the boss’ cardinal directions. Each attack applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds. Stand in the corners of the triangular telegraphs to avoid.
  • Breaking Wheel: A room-wide donut AoE that also applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Crystal Nail: Four ground AoEs that drop untargetable “Rhapsodic Nail” mobs. Each AoE will apply a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds to anyone hit.
  • Censure: Each “Rhapsodic Nail” will copy the last “Heretic Fork” or “Breaking Wheel” attack that the boss used in a clockwise order. Then, the boss will repeat the last attack it used. Dodge incoming AoEs in the order they appeared.
