FFXIV Mt. Gulg: Unlock + Dungeon Boss Guide

Inside the marble palace of Mt. Gulg (FFXIV)

The Level 79 dungeon Mt. Gulg can be unlocked by accepting the Level 79 MSQ “Extinguishing the Last Light” from Chai-Nuzz in Kholusia (X:18.6, Y:17.7). This MSQ is part of the patch 5.0 Main Scenario Questline for the Shadowbringers expansion.

In this guide we’ll explain how to unlock the dungeon, all the loot you can get, and the mechanics for each boss fight.

  1. Accept the Level 79 MSQ “Extinguishing the Last Light” from Chai-Nuzz in Kholusia (X:18.6, Y:17.7).
  2. Speak with the Crystal Exarch in Kholusia (X:18.6, Y:17.7).
  3. Catch up with Y’shtola and the scions in Kholusia (X:18.0, Y:5.5).

Detailed Unlocking Guide

Start unlocking the dungeon by accepting the Level 79 MSQ “Extinguishing the Last Light” from Chai-Nuzz in Kholusia (X:18.6, Y:17.7).

This MSQ is deep within the patch 5.0 storyline for the Shadowbringers expansion, so you’ll need to finish every MSQ leading up to it. This includes every MSQ from the A Realm Reborn base game as well as the Heavensward and Stormblood expansions.

In this part of the story, you’ve sought the assistance of Chai Nuzz in reawakening a Talos that will take you to Mt. Gulg in order to confront Lord Vaughtry.

The preparations have been completed and you only need to talk to the Crystal Exarch so he can order the reawakening.

Speak with the Crystal Exarch in Kholusia (X:18.6, Y:17.7) and tell him to relay the order.

Once the Talos is reawakened, a long cutscene will trigger showing the Talos attempting to cling onto Mt.Gulg while Vaughtry and his sin eaters mount their defense.

Luckily for the scions, Titania and a horde of Amaros will repel the incoming sin eaters, allowing the Talos to successfully grab ahold of Vaughtry’s fortress.

After the cutscene, head north and talk to Y’shtola in Kholusia (X:18.0, Y:5.5) to unlock Mt. Gulg. This dungeon requires at least a Level 79 Disciple of War or Magic job and an average item level of 390 to enter.

Mechanics

  • Rake: A red tankbuster marker on the primary target. Shield and heal through the damage.
  • Lumen Infinitum: The boss will turn toward a random player for a narrow column attack that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Cyclone Wing: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Typhoon Wing: The boss will spawn three green orbs around it that will fire frontal cone AoEs, applying stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuffs for 60 seconds to anyone hit. Later in the fight, more green orbs will spawn around the arena for point-blank AoEs that apply the same debuffs.

Boss #2: Forgiven Whimsy

Forgiven Whimsy - a sin eater with nine rotating tiles and faces / Final Fantasy XIV
Forgiven Whimsy – a sin eater with nine rotating tiles and faces

Each of this boss’ nine tiles corresponds to the nine arena floor tiles.

Throughout the fight, the boss will rotate the tiles in certain patterns. If the boss has a face over a specific tile, expect an AoE to go off on that floor tile.

Mechanics

  • Sacrament of Penance: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Exegesis: Tile-wide AoEs that apply stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuffs for 60 seconds based on the placement of faces on the boss. Stand on a tile without a corresponding face to avoid.
  • Catechism: A single-target tankbuster attack on the primary target. Use mitigation skills and heal through the damage.
  • Judgement Day: Two meteor puddles will appear in quick succession around the arena. Have at least one player stand in each puddle to avoid the room-wide AoE that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Perfect Contrition Orbs: Light spheres will appear around the arena and fire large donut AoEs that apply stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuffs for 60 seconds. These orbs will overlap with “Exegesis.” Stand in the safe tiles while dodging the donut AoEs.

Boss #3: Forgiven Obscenity

Forgiven Obscenity - The Consort of Sin / Final Fantasy XIV
Forgiven Obscenity – The Consort of Sin

Most of this boss’ attacks apply a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.

Mechanics

  • Orison Fortissimo: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Divine Diminuendo: A point-blank AoE attack.
  • Conviction Marcato: A frontal column attack.
  • Divine Diminuendo + Vaughtry’s Blessing: Adds external rings around “Divine Diminuendo” AoEs. Stand near the point-blank AoE to quickly get in the safe zones
  • Conviction Marcato + Vaughtry’s Blessing: Adds directional line attacks toward the boss’ intercardinal directions.
  • Penance Pianissimo: Outer portions of the arena will be covered in broken glass, applying a constant “Bleeding” DoT to anyone that goes out of the circular safe zone.
  • Feather Marionette: The boss will spawn four clones alongside her and use “Divine Diminuendo” and “Conviction Marcato.” Since the boss still has “Vaughtry’s Blessing,” she’ll still have the additional AoEs for her own attacks.
To handle incoming mechanics more easily, run toward the boss (indicated by the glowing halos) so you can reposition to the safe zones quickly.
  • Solitaire Ring: Six glowing orbs will spawn on one side of the arena. Then, each orb will have a glowing disc spawn in front of it at varying distances. The orbs closest to their corresponding rings will fire their line AoEs first. Determine which set of orbs will go off first and dodge accordingly.
  • Sacrament Sforzando: A single-target tankbuster attack on the primary target. Use mitigation skills and heal through the damage.
