Kanto Power Plant Machine Part Guide (Pokémon Crystal)

Outside of the Kanto Power Plant in Pokémon Crystal

To bring the Kanto Power Plant back online, you’ll have to retrieve a stolen Machine Part and bring it to the Power Plant manager.

The missing Machine Part is hidden underwater in Cerulean City’s Gym. But it can only be found there after you visit the Power Plant and discuss the situation with the manager.

You’ll find the Power Plant east of Cerulean City, past Routes 9 and 10. You’ll need Pokémon that can use Cut and Surf to reach your destination.

This side-quest should be one of the first things you do in Kanto if you want to travel freely along the entire region. And in this guide we’ll show you exactly what to do for this quest from start to finish.

Kanto Power Plant Sidequest Walkthrough

Step 1: Finding the Power Plant

Start by flying to Cerulean City and leaving through the east exit towards Route 9.

Use Cut to remove the small tree blocking your way and keep going eastward onto the sand.

Turn south and jump down a ledge, then continue your way east.

Make sure to stay in the same pathway until you’ve passed the second trainer. After that you can follow the road as it turns north.

Tip: Trainers on Routes 9 and 10, mostly Hikers and Picnickers, have Pokémon in the Lv.30 to 35 range. Be prepared!

Go north onto a small patch of grass with a Hiker. Then turn right and jump down the ledge.

Turn right immediately and walk past the Picnicker to enter Route 10.

We’re almost at the Power Plant!

Now go north and use Surf to enter the water, then start following the river downstream.

Tip: You can take a small detour southeast of here to the Route 10 Pokémon Center if your Pokémon need to heal.

Eventually you’ll see a small patch of tall grass. You can disembark in the tall grass and travel on land from here, or you can keep following the water around to reach the Power Plant entrance.

Tip: This tall grass patch is the only place in the game where you can catch Electabuzz.

Step 2: Talking to the Power Plant Manager

To start the sidequest you’ll need to talk to the manager of the Power Plant on the eastern wing of the building, near all the machines.

Speak with the manager (wearing a red shirt) and then head back outside.

As you walk out of the Power Plant after speaking with the manager, the guard will let you know that there have been some reports of a shady character around Cerulean Gym.

Step 3: Getting the Stolen Machine Part

Fly to Cerulean City and go east to enter the Cerulean Gym.

A cutscene will play as you enter the Gym where you bump into the thief on his way out.

You could follow him to find out the Machine Part’s location, but it’s easier to simply pick it up directly in its spot in the gym’s water. Here’s how:

Use Surf to enter the first square pool in the middle of the gym.

Press the action button (A) facing the top left corner of this square of water – make sure you’re surfing in the lower left corner of the pool when you do this.

If done correctly, you’ll retrieve the Machine Part.

Step 4: Returning the Machine Part

Now you’ll need to go back to the Power Plant and return the stolen Machine Part to the manager.

When you speak with him he’ll reward you with TM07 Zap Cannon, and that will wrap up this side-quest.

And with all of that completed the Kanto Power Plant will be back online.

What to Do after Fixing the Power Plant

Fixing the Power Plant is only the first step in our quest to fully explore Kanto!

Here’s what you can do now that the Kanto Power Plant is up and running again:

  • Get the Magnet Train Pass to travel between regions easily via the Magnet Train.
  • Get the Radio EXPN Card to tune into the PokéFlute Station and wake the Snorlax blocking Diglett’s Cave.
  • Interrupt Misty’s date on Route 25 (near Bill’s Sea Cottage) to unlock her Gym Leader fight.
