In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Smoke Balls can only be purchased from the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City using Game Corner Coins. Each Smoke Ball costs 800 Coins.

The fastest way to get 800 Coins is simply to buy them, which will cost around16,000 Pokédollars. Or you can win the coins playing the slot machines in the Rocket Game Corner.

There are no other methods to obtain Smoke Balls in the game.

Prerequisites

There are not many prerequisites for getting the Smoke Balls. You simply need to be able to buy them from the Game Corner in Celadon City.

So, the prerequisites are:

  • Can reach Celadon City
  • Have a Coin Case
  • Have 16,000 Poké Dollars to spend or have 800 Rocket Game Corner Coins

Once you reach Celadon City, you can easily get the Coin Case, so the main prerequisite is being able to get 800 Game Corner Coins.

How To Get Smoke Balls

Once you have the case, head back to the main building of the Rocket Game Corner (the building with all the slot machines.)

There are two ways to obtain 800 Coins.

The first way, that I highly recommend, is to buy the Coins from the cashier in the back-left corner.

The Coins can be bought in 50 or 500 Coin bundles, and cost about 20 Pokédollars a piece.

This means that a single Smoke Ball will end up costing 16,000 Pokédollars total.

While that’s quite expensive, if you decide to play the slot machines, you’ll likely end up spending a lot more than 16,000 Pokédollars trying to win 800 Coins.

The slots are not rigged in your favor, and they require quite a substantial amount of luck to actually win anything, so it’s easier and faster to just buy the coins outright.

Buying Smoke Balls

Once you have the 800 Coins from the Game Corner, you can walk outside and head next door to the prize exchange section of the Corner.

There are three cashiers inside of the prize exchange and each of them serve up a different kind of prize.

Talk to the cashier on the left to buy items like the Smoke Ball, Mystic Water, etc.

Simply select the Smoke Ball, confirm that you want to buy it, and it will be placed into your Bag.

Once you have bought the Smoke Ball, you can equip it to any Pokémon you want and roleplay as a Greninja all you want!

What Do Smoke Balls Do?

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Smoke Balls are a held item that you can give to a Pokémon. When that Pokémon is in battle and you select Run Away, it will always succeed, even when the enemy Pokémon uses a trapping move or ability that prevents running away (Diglett’s Arena Trap, for example.)

Note: You still won’t be able to run from trainer battles, only Wild Pokémon.

Still though, the Smoke Ball can be extremely useful if you’re trying to make your way through a cave or a bunch of Tall Grass with wild Pokémon above your level where Repels won’t work.

Alternatively, this held item is also useful if you’re hunting a specific Pokémon and want to run away from all other Wild Pokémon that you may encounter.

A jack of all trades when it comes to gaming. I can sit down for hours in a casual playthrough of Pokémon, or I can spend months trying to hit Diamond in League of Legends. I love and appreciate everything about games, and love sharing that passion with my readers.
