You’ll get the Sapphire from a post-game quest where you need to help Lorelei defeat Team Rocket in Icefall Cave (this requires HM07 Waterfall).
After helping Lorelei, you can find the Sapphire by completing the Dotted Hole Maze on Six Island. A Scientist will then steal the Sapphire from you and head to the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island.
So after all of that, you will need to clear the Rocket Warehouse and defeat the Scientist that stole the Sapphire to get it back and return it to Celio.
Note: You will not be able to begin the Sapphire questline until the Ruby has been returned to Celio.
Prerequisites
There are a few prerequisites that must be cleared before you can start looking for the Sapphire:
- Have the National Pokédex
- Deliver the Ruby to Celio to receive the Rainbow Pass
- Have HM07 Waterfall
If you haven’t done the Ruby questline first, that’s a must.
But the only other major prerequisite is having HM07 Waterfall, which can be found in Icefall Cave on Four Island. Luckily, we’re heading there anyway to help out Lorelei.
Getting the Sapphire
Step 1: Helping Lorelei On Four Island
The first step to getting the Sapphire is helping out Lorelei on Four Island.
To do this, you’re going to need the Rainbow Pass, which is obtained immediately after giving Celio the Ruby.
After you’ve found the Ruby and have exchanged it for the Rainbow Pass, head to the docks of any island and sail to Four Island where you’ll help Lorelei in Icefall Cave.
As soon as you land on Four Island, your Rival will greet you and tell you a bit about Pokémon Eggs.
They’ll also tell you that someone you both know is on the island and that you should go look for them.
After your Rival is done talking, head to the east side of the island. You should find a little pond for you to Surf across.
Note: If you don’t have a Pokémon in your Party that knows Waterfall, you’ll want to swing by the Pokémon Center first and grab one. If you haven’t found Waterfall yet, you can find it in Icefall Cave, where we’re going.
Surf straight north across the spall pond. Then you’ll land at the entrance of Icefall Cave.
There is also an NPC sitting next to the entrance that you can chat with if you’re feeling down after your Rival’s berating.
Once you’re inside of the cave, walk to the edge of the water and use Surf to sail forward until you see a Waterfall.
Press A on the waterfall to use HM07 Waterfall to climb up (once you have a Pokémon that knows the move).
If you don’t have a Pokémon that knows Waterfall yet, you can actually find the HM by walking through the entrance on the left and making your way to the end of the puzzle / maze. We have a separate guide on that process right here.
After you climb the Waterfall, there will be a ladder heading down in the top-left corner just outside of the water. Take that ladder down.
After you climb down the ladder, there will be a hole in the cave wall directly above you.
Head into that entrance in order to find and help Lorelei.
After you defeat the Team Rocket Grunts that were bothering Lorelei, she will threaten the Rocket Grunts into revealing their secret base’s location.
Step 2: Finding The Dotted Hole
Now that you’ve helped Lorelei, you can make your way to the Dotted Hole on Six Island and find the Sapphire.
You will need Cut and Rock Smash to get into the Dotted Hole and obtain the Sapphire.
Note: HM06 Rock Smash can be found in the spa on Kindle Road by One Island.
Once you’re ready with Pokémon that can use both HMs, you can head to the docks and set sail to Six Island.
Once you land on Six Island, head to the east side of the island. There will be a grass path going south with some tall grass along the way.
This grass path will eventually lead up a set of stairs onto the hill to the left.
Head up the hill and then just continue walking on the path, since it’s pretty linear.
Eventually you’ll cross into Ruin Valley, which starts off with a fork in the road where you can continue west or head south.
We’ll keep walking forward (west).
This path is also fairly linear so just keep following it around the top side of the hill, then head south when the path turns.
You will come across another set of stairs, but do not take these stairs here.
But as you keep going down past the stairs, you will have the option to go left or right. We want to take the path on the right.
Continue along this path until you come across a set of stairs with a Pokémaniac standing around them.
Walk up these stairs and start following this path going north.
This path is also linear, so just follow along the grass.
Up the stairs and north a bit, the path will wind and start heading east. Go ahead and keep following the path.
At this point you will see our destination: the Dotted Hole. It’ll be peeking out of the bottom-right hand side of the screen.
Continue heading east on the grassy path, and then take the next set of stairs heading up onto another dirt path with some hiker NPCs.
Follow that path heading south.
At the end of the dirt path are two final sets of stairs, which we can walk down and make our way to the entrance of the Dotted Cave.
But when you arrive here, the entrance to the Dotted Cave is blocked.
When you interact with the door you will only be able to read strange text.
To open the entrance to the dotted cave, open your Pokémon Party and select the Pokémon that knows Cut.
Then use Cut while facing the door to break it open and continue through.
Step 3: The Dotted Hole Puzzle (Finding the Sapphire)
As soon as you enter the Dotted Hole, you will see a hole in the middle of the floor. Go ahead and drop through that hole.
Once you’ve dropped through that first hole, you will be in a room with holes in the north, south, east, and west side of the room. This will lead to other rooms with similar holes.
Take the holes in this exact order to reach the Sapphire:
- Top (North Hole)
- Left (West Hole)
- Right (East Hole)
- Bottom (South Hole)
When you drop through the final hole, you will land in a room with the Sapphire on the ground.
Walk up and press A on the Sapphire to try to pick it up.
When you try to pick up the Sapphire, another person will drop into the room with you.
They will swipe the Sapphire up from under your nose and give you the password to Team Rocket’s Warehouse so you can go get it back.
After the thief leaves to sell the Sapphire to Team Rocket, you can also leave by taking the ladder up to the surface.
Now we have to head to Five Island and get the Sapphire back from Team Rocket.
Step 4: Finding the Five Island Rocket Warehouse (Getting the Sapphire Back)
To get to the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island, head to the docks and select Five Island.
Once you land on Five Island, walk out of the dock area and make your way to the east side of the island, following the beach.
Towards the end of the short path there will be a staircase heading up into a small wooded area.
Take that staircase and start making your way through the forest, still going east.
Eventually, the path will curve and start heading south.
Follow the grassy path headed south, walking along the water’s edge.
As you near the end of this grass path, there will be another set of stairs that leads up to a building (the Team Rocket Warehouse).
Take this set of stairs and head to the Warehouse.
Now, usually this door would be locked. But since we helped out Lorelei and got the password from the person in the Dotted Hole, we can actually enter the Warehouse.
Walk up to the door and press A. Your character will automatically enter the password and you’ll be able to walk inside.
Step 5: The Rocket Warehouse Arrow Maze
The inside of the Rocket Warehouse is an Arrow Maze, something we’ve seen time and time again.
Here’s how to get through it step-by-step:
First, walk on the first set of Arrow pads aiming left.
The arrow will send you flying across multiple arrows and you will eventually land on a yellow landing pad.
From here, step immediately left and take the Arrow facing up.
Once that pad has sent you all the way to the north side of the Warehouse, you’ll need to defeat the Rocket Grunt (or walk around them), and then step onto the arrow pad that’s facing down on the other side of the room.
Look for the circled pad below to see exactly which pad to take.
This arrow pad will send you tumbling again until you eventually land on another landing pad.
From here, walk north but make sure not to step on any other arrow pads accidentally.
Just keep walking north until you see a Team Rocket Grunt member standing guard at the end of the path.
Defeat the Team Rocket member and then take the middle left-facing arrow pad – it should be exactly two spaces to the left of the Rocket Grunt.
This pad is circled in the image below.
This arrow pad will send you tumbling to another yellow landing pad.
Avoid all other arrow pads for now and just follow the pathway on your left-hand side, carefully making your way northward.
And still without stepping on any arrow pads, start heading east once you can’t continue north any further.
Once you reach the very north-east portion of the Rocket Warehouse, take the down-facing arrow pad all the way against the right wall.
And then finally, once this arrow pad drops you off you’ll just want to walk slightly south.
This leads to a battle where you’ll need to defeat the Team Rocket Grunt in your path.
Then you can take the final right-facing arrow pad leading into the east section of the Warehouse.
Now we just have to walk up north, battle the Team Rocket members along the way, and get the Sapphire back.
Step 6: Re-Acquiring the Sapphire
Walk north through the corridor, defeat the two Rocket Members standing guard, and continue north until you see the Scientist that stole the Sapphire in the first place.
The final step is to challenge this NPC (Scientist Gideon) to a battle so that you can get the Sapphire back and return it to Celio.
After defeating Gideon, he’ll hand the Sapphire over and you can make your way out of the Team Rocket Warehouse.
Head back to Celio in the Network Center on One Island and talk to him to hand him the Sapphire.
After you give Celio the Sapphire, he’ll completely fix the Network Machine and you’ll be able to trade with any of the RSE Hoenn games from Gen III.
