In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there are seven different ways to obtain Sun Stones. The easiest way to acquire a Sun Stone is in Mossdeep City, where an NPC will give it to you when you talk to him at the Mossdeep Space Center.
Or completing the Secret Super Training stage “Drag Down Hydreigon!” offers a reliable way to acquire multiple Sun Stones.
There are still more ways to obtain these stones, although other methods might be more tedious. In this guide we’ll cover a list of all the different ways you can farm Sun Stones in the game.
- Method 1 – Mossdeep Space Center (One-time Only)
- Method 2 – Secret Super Training: Drag Down Hydreigon!
- Method 3 – Pokémon with the Ability Pickup
- Method 4 – Inverse Battle Stop
- Method 5 – Rematch with Expert Timothy
- Method 6 – Secret Pal Skill: Pick Up Stones
- Method 7 – Stealing from Wild Solrock (Omega Ruby Only)
- Sun Stone Uses
Method 1 – Mossdeep Space Center (One-time Only)
A guaranteed way to acquire a Sun Stone is at the Mossdeep Space Center located in the city’s far northeast area. On the building’s first floor, a Sailor will give you a Sun Stone just for speaking with him.
Simply return to Mossdeep City to get started.
Step 1: After you’ve arrived in Mossdeep City, immediately head to the top-right area of the city, which is home to the Mossdeep Space Center.
Step 2: Enter the Mossdeep Space Center and make your way to the northwest side of the room, behind the photo cutout board.
Step 3: Behind the board you’ll find a Sailor walking around. Speak to him and he’ll give you a Sun Stone.
Method 2 – Secret Super Training: Drag Down Hydreigon!
Secret Super Training is a series of mini-games designed for fully-trained Pokémon to obtain rare items. If you complete the stage called “Drag Down Hydreigon!” within the target time, you have the chance to win one of the following prizes:
- Sun Stone
- Moon Stone
- Lemonade
- PP Up
- Pretty Wing
- Stardust
Because Super Training becomes available once Wally captures his Ralts, this method does provide the earliest opportunity to obtain a Sun Stone. However it should be noted that fully training a Pokémon’s EVs (Effort Values) may require a bit of time and effort.
If you already have a fully-trained Pokémon and are looking for a Sun Stone, here’s how to unlock the stage which presents it as a reward:
Step 1: Navigate to your PlayNav in the bottom screen. Then, find and click the Super Training screen.
Step 2: On the Super Training screen, a radar chart displays your Pokémon’s EV distribution.
If you see that the meter on the right is filled and a muscle icon appears in the top-left of your screen, it means your Pokémon’s total EVs are fully maxed out at 510.
Step 3: Press the green button on the bottom left corner of the screen. You’ll see 12 new unlockable Secret Super Training stages, exclusively for fully-trained Pokémon.
If you want a chance to obtain a Sun Stone, you’ll have to unlock the stage: Drag Down Hydreigon!
Step 4: Once you complete this stage within the target time, you have a good chance to obtain a Sun Stone.
Method 3 – Pokémon with the Ability Pickup
You can also utilize Pokémon with the Pickup ability to get Sun Stones. Good examples of Pickup Pokémon include Zigzagoon and Linoone.
Here’s how Pickup works:
After winning a battle, a Pokémon with the ability Pickup in your party has a 10% chance to find an item, as long as it’s not already holding one. This ability remains active even if the Pokémon didn’t take part in the battle or is fainted.
The higher your Pickup user’s level, the better your odds of obtaining a Sun Stone.
Below are the chances of finding a Sun Stone based on your Pickup user’s level:
Pokémon’s Level | Chance at a Sun Stone |
---|---|
1-30 | 0% |
31-50 | 4% |
51-100 | 10% |
Tip: Include up to six Pokémon with the Pickup ability in your party simultaneously to boost your odds of finding a Sun Stone. After winning battles, check if any of them have picked up an item. You’re bound to get other valuable items in the process as well.
Method 4 – Inverse Battle Stop
The Inverse Battle Stop is a unique battle facility operated by a trainer named Inver, where Inverse Battles take place. Inverse battles are a special type of Pokémon battle in which type matchups are reversed, making moves that are usually super effective, not very effective, and vice versa.
Should you manage to defeat Inver, he’ll reward you with an item based on your score.
Each super-effective move you land earns you a point, while each super-effective move he lands against you causes a one-point deduction.
Scoring between 7 to 9 points gives you a 10% chance of obtaining a Sun Stone. Each prize in this pool has an equal probability (10%) of being awarded. The prize pool for this score range includes the following:
- Fire Stone
- Leaf Stone
- Water Stone
- Thunder Stone
- Sun Stone
- Moon Stone
- Dawn Stone
- Dusk Stone
- Shiny Stone
- Everstone
If you don’t know where the Inverse Battle Stop is, here’s how to get there:
Step 1: Begin at the Pokémon Center in Mauville City. Then head back inside the city’s interior through the entrance on the right.
Step 2: Once inside the city, proceed slightly north and enter the very first storefront on your left – this is the Inverse Battle Stop.
Step 3: After entering the facility, talk to Inver to start the challenge. Remember to track your points – accumulate a score of 7-9 to have a chance of obtaining a Sun Stone.
Method 5 – Rematch with Expert Timothy
The AreaNav is a feature of the PokéNav Plus, which displays a map of the Hoenn Region. Upon selecting the map, you will see various tabs, including the Trainer’s Eye tab. This tab allows you to locate specific trainers across Hoenn who are ready for a rematch, indicated by a “Battle Ready” sign next to their profile.
Defeating rematchable trainers here gives you a small chance of obtaining an item as a reward. When you defeat Expert Timothy, he has a 5% chance of rewarding you with a Sun Stone.
Expert Timothy can be found on Route 115, a route situated between Rustboro City and Meteor Falls.
Note: To navigate this route and find Expert Timothy you’ll need a Pokémon in your party that knows HM03 Surf.
Before heading out, just make sure to check the Trainer’s Eye tab at Route 115 to see if Expert Timothy is available for a rematch. If he is, fly back to Rustboro City to get started (this is because Route 115 isn’t directly accessible using Fly or the Eon Flute.)
Step 1: From Rustboro City’s Pokémon Center, head north along the path on the right until you reach the city’s northern exit, which leads to Route 115.
Step 2: Stay on this path until you reach Route 115. Then go down the ledge by the Aroma Lady and head to the nearby beach.
Step 3: When you get to the beach, use HM03 Surf at the top left corner of the sea.
Step 4: Keep surfing north, making your way through the tight pass between the island and the rocks.
Step 5: Soon you’ll notice another beach on the northeast side of the ocean.
Disembark there when you see it.
Step 6: When you get to the beach, find the stairs to your right and climb up them.
Then walk north on the path on the right side where a Black Belt NPC is wandering around.
Step 7: Keep going north until you can turn left by a white picket fence. This is where you’ll see Expert Timothy at the end of the path.
Go talk to him for a rematch.
Method 6 – Secret Pal Skill: Pick Up Stones
You have a chance to obtain Sun Stones by using the “Pick Up Stones” Secret Pal skill, which is one of the features of Super-Secret Bases.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Super-Secret Bases are an upgraded version of the Secret Base feature from the original games. After making your own Secret Base using TM94 Secret Power, you can customize and share your base with other players.
You can also visit other Secret Bases to interact with other players, challenge them to battles, and if you want, make them one of your Secret Pals.
Each Secret Pal can use a special skill once a day; a pal can learn up to four of the ten possible skills:

Method 7 – Stealing from Wild Solrock (Omega Ruby Only)
Exclusively on Omega Ruby, you can obtain Sun Stones as held items from wild Solrock. These can be found anywhere within Meteor Falls.
Even though you’ll encounter various other Pokémon on each level of the cave, the odds of encountering Solrock stays fixed at 25% regardless of where you are in Meteor Falls.
Note: If you’re playing Alpha Sapphire, you’ll find Lunatone instead, which can only hold a Moon Stone.
When you encounter Solrock, there’s a 5% chance they will be holding a Sun Stone. To take the item just use a Pokémon that knows TM46 Thief. If you want more details on how to optimally farm held items from wild Pokémon then we have a separate guide with a complete strategy for that.
Here’s the complete list of Pokémon available on the first floor of Meteor Falls:
Meteor Falls 1F – Wild Pokémon
Pokemon (Tall Grass) | Encounter Chance | Levels |
---|---|---|
Solrock | 25% (OR) | 16-19 |
Lunatone | 25% (AS) | 16-19 |
Zubat | 75% | 16-19 |
Farming with Detector Mode
To increase your chances of finding a Sun Stone, use your DexNav’s Detector Mode.
Here’s how it works:
Each encounter with a particular species of Pokémon, regardless of whether you catch it or not, increases DexNav’s search level and the likelihood of encountering Pokémon carrying items like a Solrock holding a Sun Stone.
Sun Stone Uses
A Sun Stone can be used to evolve 5 different types of Pokémon in OR/AS. Once the evolution process is complete, the Sun Stone is consumed and disappears.
As of Gen 6, the following Pokémon evolve with a Sun Stone:
Use a Sun Stone on | To evolve into |
---|---|
Gloom | Bellossom |
Sunkern | Sunflora |
Cottonee | Whimsicott |
Petilil | Lilligant |
Helioptile | Heliolisk |
