FFXIV Smileton: How To Unlock + Dungeon Guide

Smileton - an abandoned paradise on the moon

The Level 90 dungeon Smileton can be unlocked by accepting the Level 90 quest “Cutting the Cheese” from the Panic-stricken Loporrit in Old Sharlayan (X:11.8, Y:11.4). But you’ll first need to finish the final MSQ for patch 6.0 of the Endwalker expansion before this unlocking quest becomes available.

Unlocking Quest: Cutting the Cheese

Smileton is one of the expert-level dungeons made available in the Endwalker expansion.

You’ll need to finish the Level 90 MSQ “Endwalker” from Alphinaud in Ultima Thule (X:21.5, Y:21.5) before its unlocking quest, “Cutting the Cheese,” becomes available.

After doing so, speak with the Panic-stricken Loporrit in Old Sharlayan (X:11.8, Y: 11.4) to begin.

The desperate Loporrit bids you to make haste toward Kydonia Knolis and assist Buildingway with an “emergency of cataclysmic proportions.”

Travel to Mare Lamentorum (X:11.8, Y:22.9) to continue.

The Loporrits have constructed Smileton as a domicile intended for the evacuation of the people of Etheirys during the Final Days. After you and your allies averted the disastrous calamity, the facility has been left under the care of the automated construction machine named the Big Cheese.

This automaton is now running amok and has begun burrowing under the moon with reckless abandon and must be destroyed. After talking to Buildingway, Smileton will be unlocked. This dungeon requires at least a Level 90 Disciple of War or Magic job and an average item level of 540 to enter.

Boss #1: Face

Face - Smiley or Frowny / Final Fantasy XIV
Face – Smiley or Frowny

Mechanics

  • Lines of Fire: The boss will tether to four faces on one side of the arena. These faces will eventually fire non-telegraphed line AoEs that apply either a stacking blue “Smiley Face” or a stacking red “Frowny Face” status depending on their color.

This mechanic will happen multiple times throughout the fight and you don’t want to receive more than one stack of either status. Receiving two stacks results in a knockback and 5-second stun, and receiving three stacks results in instant death. Alternate between the two statuses throughout the fight.

  • Off My Lawn + Temper Temper: A room-wide knockback attack from the northern or southern edge of the arena while all players receive targeted circle AoEs. Spread out to avoid overlap and use knockback-immunity skills as needed.
This mechanic will overlap with “Lines of Fire,” so position yourselves to be knocked into the correct “Face” column attack that you need to get hit by.
  • Temper’s Flare: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Heart on Fire IV: A red tankbuster marker on the primary target. Mitigate and heal through the damage.
  • Upside Down: Flips the faces upside down and switches their colors.

Mechanics

  • Circular Saw: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Leap Forward: The boss will face a random direction along with two arrows indicating where the boss will jump toward. Then, it’ll jump and use a large circle AoE with a late telegraph that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Print Workers: The boss will tether to two robots that will spawn “Printed Worker” mobs. After a few seconds, these robots will order the workers to use “Leap Forward.”
  • Omnidimensional Onslaught: Two sets of cone AoEs toward the cardinal and intercardinal directions that apply stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuffs for 60 seconds. Determine which set will go off first and dodge accordingly.
  • Steel Beam: A red tankbuster marker on the primary target. Use mitigation skills and heal through the damage.

Boss #3: The Big Cheese

The Big Cheese - Smilemaker / Final Fantasy XIV

Most of the boss’ attacks apply a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.

Mechanics

  • Explosives Distribution: The boss will spawn an explosive on each conveyor belt toward its sides. After a few seconds, the explosives will be moved forward depending on the number of arrows indicated on the conveyor belt.

To handle this mechanic, you can either:

    • Run near the boss toward the side of the long-distance explosive (indicated by nine arrows).
    • Run away from the boss toward the side of the short-distance explosive (indicated by three arrows).
  • Piercing Missile: A red tankbuster marker on the primary target. Shield and heal through the damage.
  • Dispense Explosives: Mines will appear around the room, applying dispellable 18-second “Paralysis” debuffs to anyone that touches them.
  • Explosive Power: The boss will eventually trigger the mines, causing them to explode and disappear.
  • Right or Left Disassembler: A column AoE that covers half the room. This will overlap with other mechanics and greatly reduces your safe zones.
  • Violent Discharge: A room-wide AoE attack.
  • Electric Arc: A stack marker on a random player. Stand with the affected player to share incoming damage.
  • Leveling Missile: Targeted AoE circles on all players. Spread out to avoid overlapping damage.
