In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire there are five different ways to obtain Water Stones. The easiest way to get a Water Stone is to complete either of the following Secret Super Training stages:

  • “The Water Stone Cup Begins!”
  • “The Battle for the Best!”

If you don’t want to play and unlock stages of Secret Super Training, you can also get a Water Stone from the Treasure Hunter NPC. You’ll find him in a cabin on Route 124 where he’ll trade you a Water Stone for a Blue Shard.

There are other ways to obtain Water Stones as well, although the other methods might be more tedious. But in this guide we’ll cover all of the ways you can farm Water Stones in the game.

Method 1 – Secret Super Training: The Water Stone Cup Begins! / The Battle for the Best!

Training against a Blastoise Balloon / Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Training against a Blastoise Balloon

Secret Super Training is a series of mini-games designed for fully-trained Pokémon to obtain rare items.

If you complete either of the stages called “The Water Stone Cup Begins!” or “The Battle for the Best!” within the target time, you have the chance to win the following prizes:

Stage Possible Prizes
The Water Stone Cup Begins!
  • Water Stone
  • Hard Stone
  • Pretty Wing
  • Soda Pop
  • Stardust
The Battle for the Best!
  • Fire Stone
  • Leaf Stone
  • Moomoo Milk
  • PP Max
  • PP Up
  • Pretty Wing
  • Thunder Stone
  • Water Stone

Tip: Both stages can reward you with a Water Stone, but “The Water Stone Cup Begins!” is more likely to give you one since its prize pool is smaller.

Because Super Training becomes available once Wally captures his Ralts, this method does provide the earliest opportunity to obtain a Water Stone. But fully training a Pokémon’s EVs (Effort Values) may require a bit of time and effort.

If you already have a fully-trained Pokémon and are looking for a Water Stone, here’s how to unlock the stage which presents it as a reward:

Step 1: Navigate to your PlayNav in the bottom screen. Then find and click the Super Training button.

Step 2: On the Super Training screen, a radar chart displays your Pokémon’s EV distribution.

If you see that the meter on the right is filled and a muscle icon appears in the top-left of your screen, it means your Pokémon’s total EVs are fully maxed out at 510.

Step 3: Press the green button on the bottom left corner of the screen here. You’ll see 12 new unlockable Secret Super Training stages, exclusively for fully-trained Pokémon.

If you want a chance to obtain a Water Stone, you’ll have to unlock either of the stages: “The Water Stone Cup Begins!” or “The Battle for the Best!”.

Method 2 – Trade with the Treasure Hunter on Route 124

The Treasure Hunter is an NPC who trades shards for various Evolution Stones. He can be found on an island house on Route 124, between Lilycove City and Mossdeep City.

You can trade one Blue Shard for one Water Stone.

Here’s the full list of shards that can be traded for Evolution Stones:

Shard Evolution Stone
Red Shard Fire Stone
Yellow Shard Thunder Stone
Blue Shard Water Stone
Green Shard Leaf Stone

Tip: If you’re looking for Blue Shards, try searching in Mirage Caves. Each Mirage Cave contains a hidden item, and you might find a Blue Shard there.

If you don’t know where the Treasure Hunter’s house is, simply fly back to Route 124 and you’ll land on the island with his house right there.

Method 3 – Inverse Battle Stop

Talking to Inver / Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Talking to Inver

The Inverse Battle Stop is a unique battle facility operated by a trainer named Inver, where Inverse Battles take place. Inverse battles are a special type of Pokémon battle in which type matchups are reversed, making moves that are usually super effective, not very effective, and vice versa.

Each super-effective move you land earns you a point, while each super-effective move he lands against you causes a one-point deduction. If you defeat Inver in a battle then he’ll reward you with an item based on your score.

Scoring between 7 to 9 points gives you a 10% chance of obtaining a Water Stone.

Each prize in this pool has an equal probability (10%) of being awarded. The prize pool for this score range includes the following:

  • Fire Stone
  • Leaf Stone
  • Water Stone
  • Thunder Stone
  • Sun Stone
  • Moon Stone
  • Dawn Stone
  • Dusk Stone
  • Shiny Stone
  • Everstone

If you don’t know where the Inverse Battle Stop is, here’s how to get there:

Step 1: Begin at the Pokémon Center in Mauville City. Then head back inside the city’s interior through the entrance on the right.

Step 2: Once inside the city, proceed slightly north and take your first left turn into the first shop. This is the Inverse Battle Stop.

Step 3: After entering the facility, talk to Inver to start the challenge. Remember to track your points – you need to accumulate a score of 7-9 to have a chance of obtaining a Water Stone.

Method 4 – Rematch with Fisherman Elliot (Route 106)

The AreaNav is a feature of the PokéNav Plus that displays the map of the Hoenn Region.

Upon selecting the map, you will see various tabs including the Trainer’s Eye tab.

This tab allows you to locate specific trainers across Hoenn who are ready for a rematch, indicated by a “Battle Ready” sign next to their profile.

Defeating rematchable trainers gives you a small chance of obtaining an item as a reward.

Fisherman Elliot is the NPC you want to re-battle for Water Stones – he has a 5% chance of rewarding you with a Water Stone after each rematch.

You can find Fisherman Elliot on Route 106, which is located near Dewford Town and is the route where Granite Cave is located. Here’s exactly how to find Elliot to request your rematch:

Step 1: Start by heading west past the wooden sign on Route 106.

Step 2: Then follow the narrow path along the shoreline going northwest. You’ll be passing up behind Granite Cave.

Method 5 – Secret Pal Skill: Pick Up Stones

Talking to a Secret Pal / Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Talking to a Secret Pal

You have a chance to obtain a Water Stone by using the “Pick Up Stones” Secret Pal skill, which is one of the features of Super-Secret Bases.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Super-Secret Bases are an upgraded version of the Secret Base feature from the original games. After making your own Secret Base using TM94 Secret Power, you can customize and share your base with other players.

You can also visit other Secret Bases to interact with other players, challenge them to battles, and if you want, make them one of your Secret Pals.

Each Secret Pal can use a special skill once a day; a pal can learn up to four of the ten possible skills. Here’s a full list of all skills and what they do:
