In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire there are seven different ways to obtain a Thunder Stone. The easiest way to acquire a Thunder Stone is in New Mauville. You can find it as an overworld item among a cluster of Voltorb disguised as items in the main room.
If you don’t have access to New Mauville yet, another reliable way to acquire a Thunder Stone is to complete either of the following Secret Super Training stages:
- “Follow Those Fleeing Goals!”
- “The Battle for the Best!”
Should you require additional Thunder Stones then take a look over all of the options in this guide. We’ll cover a list of all the single-location stones & all of the ways you can farm Thunder Stones in the game.
- Method 1 – New Mauville (One-time Only)
- Method 2 – Secret Super Training: Follow Those Fleeing Goals! / The Battle for the Best!
- Method 3 – Trade with the Treasure Hunter on Route 124
- Method 4 – Inverse Battle Stop
- Method 5 – Rematch with Triathlete Dylan
- Method 6 – Rematch with Guitarist Dalton
- Method 7 – Secret Pal Skill: Pick Up Stones
- Thunder Stone Uses
Method 1 – New Mauville (One-time Only)

New Mauville is an underground power plant located on Route 110. You can only access it after you’ve begun Gym Leader Wattson’s side quest. This quest becomes available after defeating or capturing Kyogre or Groudon in the Cave of Origin.
We also have a more detailed guide explaining how to unlock New Mauville, so consult that if you need help.
Once you’re ready, head to New Mauville and we’ll show you where to find the Thunder Stone.
Step 1: Enter New Mauville and go to the right side of the main room.

Step 2: There you’ll see five items on the ground.
However, the first two items in the bottom row are actually Voltorbs in disguise. As for the Thunder Stone, it’s the item on the far left of the top row.

Step 3: To get to the Thunder Stone at the end of the path, you must first pick up the Paralyze Heal that is blocking your way.

Method 2 – Secret Super Training: Follow Those Fleeing Goals! / The Battle for the Best!

Secret Super Training is a series of mini-games designed for fully-trained Pokémon to obtain rare items. If you complete the stage called “Follow Those Fleeing Goals!” or “The Battle for the Best!” within the target time, you have the chance to win the following prizes:
Stage | Possible Prizes |
---|---|
Follow Those Fleeing Goals! |
|
The Battle for the Best! |
|
Tip: Both stages can reward you with a Thunder Stone, but “Follow Those Fleeing Goals!” is more likely to give you one since its prize pool is smaller.
Because Super Training becomes available once Wally captures his Ralts, this method does provide the earliest opportunity to obtain a Thunder Stone. However, fully training a Pokémon’s EVs (Effort Values) may require a bit of time and effort.
If you already have a fully-trained Pokémon and are looking for a Thunder Stone, here’s how to unlock the stage which presents it as a reward:
Step 1: Navigate to your PlayNav in the bottom screen. Then find and click the Super Training screen.

Step 2: On the Super Training screen, a radar chart displays your Pokémon’s EV distribution.
If you see that the meter on the right is filled and a muscle icon appears in the top-left of your screen, it means your Pokémon’s total EVs are fully maxed out at 510.

Step 3: Press the green button on the bottom left corner of the screen. You’ll see 12 new unlockable Secret Super Training stages, exclusively for fully-trained Pokémon.
If you want a chance to obtain a Thunder Stone, you’ll have to unlock either of the stages: “Follow Those Fleeing Goals!” or “The Battle for the Best!”.

Step 4: Once you complete the stage within the target time, you have a good chance to obtain a Thunder Stone.

Method 3 – Trade with the Treasure Hunter on Route 124

The Treasure Hunter is an NPC who trades shards for various Evolution Stones, including Thunder Stones. He can be found on an island house on Route 124 between Lilycove City and Mossdeep City.
You can trade one Yellow Shard for one Thunder Stone.
Here’s the full list of shards that can be traded for Evolution Stones:
Shard | Evolution Stone |
---|---|
Red Shard | Fire Stone |
Yellow Shard | Thunder Stone |
Blue Shard | Water Stone |
Green Shard | Leaf Stone |
Tip: If you’re looking for Yellow Shards, try searching in Mirage Mountains. Each Mirage Mountain contains a hidden item, and you might find a Yellow Shard there.
If you don’t know where the Treasure Hunter’s house is, simply fly back to Route 124 and you’ll land on the island where his house is on.

Method 4 – Inverse Battle Stop

The Inverse Battle Stop is a unique battle facility operated by a trainer named Inver, where Inverse Battles take place.
Inverse battles are a special type of Pokémon battle in which type matchups are reversed, making moves that are usually super effective, not very effective, and vice versa.
Should you manage to defeat Inver, he’ll reward you with an item based on your score.
Each super-effective move you land earns you a point, while each super-effective move he lands against you causes a one-point deduction.
Scoring between 7 to 9 points gives you a 10% chance of obtaining a Thunder Stone. Each prize in this pool has an equal probability (10%) of being awarded. The prize pool for this score range includes the following:
- Fire Stone
- Leaf Stone
- Water Stone
- Thunder Stone
- Sun Stone
- Moon Stone
- Dawn Stone
- Dusk Stone
- Shiny Stone
- Everstone
If you don’t know where the Inverse Battle Stop is then here’s how to get there:
Step 1: Begin at the Pokémon Center in Mauville City. Then head back inside the city’s interior through the entrance on the right.

Step 2: Once inside the city, proceed slightly north and turn left into the first stall that you see – you’ll find the Inverse Battle Stop.

Step 3: After entering the facility, talk to Inver to start the challenge. Remember to track your points – accumulate a score of 7-9 to have a chance of obtaining a Thunder Stone.

Method 5 – Rematch with Triathlete Dylan

The AreaNav is a feature of the PokéNav Plus which displays the map of the Hoenn Region.
Upon selecting the map, you will see various tabs including the Trainer’s Eye tab.
This tab allows you to locate specific trainers across Hoenn who are ready for a rematch, indicated by a “Battle Ready” sign next to their profile.

Defeating rematchable trainers gives you a small chance of obtaining an item as a reward. When you defeat Triathlete Dylan, he has a 5% chance of rewarding you with a Thunder Stone.
Triathlete Dylan can be found on Route 117, which is between Mauville City and Verdanturf Town. You can find him near the path by the Day Care Center.
Before heading out to re-battle him, just check the Trainer’s Eye tab at Route 117 to see if he’s available for a rematch. If he is then fly back to Route 117 and we’ll show you where to find him.
Step 1: Head northwest along the path from the route sign. You’ll be traveling along the route’s Day Care Center.

Step 2: As you keep moving westward, you’ll eventually encounter Triathlete Dylan jogging around. He’s wearing red shorts and red shoes.
Speak with him to initiate the rematch.

Method 6 – Rematch with Guitarist Dalton

Defeating Guitarist Dalton in a rematch using Trainer’s Eye also gives you a 5% chance to obtain a Thunder Stone.
Guitarist Dalton can be found on Route 118. You can find him by the beach on the route’s west side.
If he’s ready for a rematch then fly back to Mauville City to reach Guitarist Dalton faster. (Directly flying to Route 118 will take you to the east side of the route, which makes the journey longer because of the water dividing the route.)
Step 1: Start from the Mauville PokeCenter and head back inside the city’s interior through the entrance on the right.

Step 2: Once you’re back inside the city, continue east until you reach the city’s exit to Route 118.

Step 3: When you reach Route 118, keep going east until you reach the beach.

Step 4: Eventually you’ll spot Guitarist Dalton standing near the shoreline. He will be wearing an all-black outfit and sporting blonde hair.
Speak with him to start the rematch.

Method 7 – Secret Pal Skill: Pick Up Stones

You also have a chance to obtain a Thunder Stone by using the “Pick Up Stones” Secret Pal skill, which is one of the features of Super-Secret Bases.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Super-Secret Bases are an upgraded version of the Secret Base feature from the original games.
After making your own Secret Base using TM94 Secret Power, you can customize and share your base with other players.
You can also visit other Secret Bases to interact with other players, challenge them to battles, and if you want, make them one of your Secret Pals.
Each Secret Pal can use a special skill once a day; a pal can learn up to four of the ten possible skills:
