In Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there are two different ways to obtain a Sharp Beak. The easiest way to acquire a Sharp Beak is by exploring the S.S. Tidal, where an NPC will give it to you when you talk to him in the ship’s Storage Room.

Alternatively you can use Thief to steal Sharp Beaks from wild Doduo found in the Safari Zone. Doduo only has a 5% chance of holding a Sharp Beak, but you can use your DexNav to improve your odds of finding one.

Method 1 – S.S. Tidal (One-time Only)

The S.S. Tidal is a ship that transports you between Lilycove City and Slateport City, as well as the Battle Resort later into the game. To explore the ship, you’ll need the S.S. Ticket. You can obtain the S.S. Ticket from Norman in Littleroot Town after completing the Delta Episode.

The NPC who will give you the free Sharp Beak can be found in the southeast corner of the ship’s Storage Room. When you find him, simply talk to him to get the item.

Once you’ve obtained the S.S. Ticket, fly to a nearby harbor in either Slateport or Lilycove City:

Step 1: Show your ticket to the attendant and choose your destination: Lilycove City from Slateport Harbor, or Slateport City from Lilycove Harbor.

Don’t pick The Battle Resort since you won’t be able to explore the ship.

Step 2: Once you’re aboard the S.S. Tidal, go down the staircase that’s located immediately south of you.

Method 2 – Stealing from Wild Doduo

The Sharp Beak can also be obtained as a held item on wild Doduo. Doduo can be found in any tall grass inside the Safari Zone, located on Route 121. Doduo is found in all four sections of the Safari Zone, despite each section containing mostly different Pokémon.

When you encounter a Doduo, there’s a 5% chance it will be holding a Sharp Beak. To take the item you can use a Pokémon that knows TM46 Thief.

Here’s the full details on Doduo’s encounter rates for each section of the Safari Zone:

DexNav Detector Mode

To increase the chances of finding a Sharp Beak as a held item, you can use your DexNav’s Detector Mode.

Here’s how:

After catching a specific species of Pokémon, you can use the DexNav to track more of the same species in the wild. The DexNav’s search level increases with each encounter with this Pokémon, regardless of whether you catch it or not. As this level rises, the likelihood of encountering wild Pokémon carrying items also increases.

How Sharp Beaks Work

In-game details for Sharp Beak / Pokémon ORAS
In-game details for Sharp Beak

The Sharp Beak is a held item that boosts the power of Flying-type moves used by the holder by 20%.

While Flying-type coverage moves may not be the most popular, the Sharp Beak can prove highly beneficial when paired with STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves like Brave Bird on Physical Sweepers like Talonflame or Staraptor.

Unlike the Life Orb and Choice items, which offer a significant power boost but come with drawbacks, the Sharp Beak boosts Flying-type moves without any negative effects.

However, the sheer power those items provide compared to the Sharp Beak could be the difference between KO-ing an opponent and letting them survive for another turn. As a result, the Sharp Beak may not always be the optimal choice as a held item.

Lastly, one advantage that’s often overlooked is that your opponent can’t know what item you’re holding unless they have Frisk. This can catch them off guard and make them underestimate the damage your Flying-type moves can deal.
