Coal falls under Spiritfarer’s rock category of materials you can mine. Once acquired, coal is used to craft at least 1 building and 1 construction improvement.
It’s also used in the Foundry to fuel the melting process, and it can also be turned to carbon powder via the Crusher.
Coal Mining Nodes (All Locations)
Here are all of the islands where you can acquire coal via mining:
- Hoseki Quarry
- Mount Toroyama
- Kalstein Mines
- Southpoint Docks
- Flotsam Shores
- Shadow Forest
Note: Keep in mind that once you have unlocked the Improved Tools ability, mining a coal node will also yield 1 diamond everytime.
Hoseki Quarry
Located on the World Map’s west section, this island doesn’t require any ship improvement to reach and can be found at X: -138, Y: 28.
Coal Node #1
Step 1: From the entrance, head up two sets of ladders.
Step 2: Once you’re at the top, jump to a small landing on your right to find the first coal node.
Coal Node #2
Step 1: From the first coal node, head to your left.
Step 2: Once you find a fork on the road, head to the path going up.
Step 3: You’ll find the coal node shortly.
Mount Toroyama
The second island is Mount Toroyama at X: -99, Y: 34, just beside Hoseki Quarry. It also doesn’t require any ship improvements to reach.
Coal Node #1
From the entrance, walk to your left until you find the first coal node.
Coal Node #2
Keep walking to your left from the initial coal node until you find a path going up to your right. Follow this path.
Keep going up the path until you find a ladder. Climb up.
Keep going up and eventually you’ll have to choose between jumping to the left or right – in this case go towards the left.
Walk to your left here to find the 2nd coal node.
Kalstein Mines
Next up is Kalstein Mines, located at X: -99, Y: 117, on the north winter side of Hummingberg.
Visiting this island requires the Icebreaker Boat Improvement.
Coal Node #1
Step 1: From the entrance, head to your right and slide down the slope until you reach the bottom.
Step 2: From the bottom of the slope, double jump to your right to reach the zipline.
Step 3: Ride the zipline going to your right until you reach a small landing with the coal node.
Coal Node #2
Step 1: From the last coal node, jump to your left and ride the zipline, getting on a landing with a marble node.
Step 2: From the marble node, jump to your right and ride the zipline.
Step 3: Transfer to the next zipline and keep riding to your right.
Step 4: Land on the air vent and use it to glide up.
Step 5: While gliding up, go to your left and ride the zipline to reach the higher level.
Step 6: Once you land, go up the two sets of ladders.
Step 7: When you reach the top, continue walking to your right until you find another giant air vent.
Step 8: Use it to glide up.
Step 9: Once you reach the ceiling, glide to your left to reach the next landing.
Step 10: From the landing, double jump to your right to reach the next landing on top of you. This is where the final coal node is located.
Southpoint Docks
You can head to Southpoint Docks at X: 157, Y: 22. Note that this island requires the Rock Destroyer Boat Improvement.
There’s also just one coal node here:
Step 1: Walk to your right until you find a yellow shipping container.
Step 2: Climb up the yellow shipping container to find the coal node.
Flotsam Shores
Flotsam Shores is at the coordinates X: 109, Y: -107, located south of Southpoint Docks. Note that this island also needs the Rock Destroyer Boat Improvement.
And this island also has just one coal node to find:
Step 1: From the island’s starting point, head right and enter the door on the red shipping container.
Step 2: Once inside, keep dropping down until you reach the bottom floor.
Step 3: You’ll find the coal node right at the bottom floor with the red walls.
Shadow Forest
The last island with a coal node Shadow Forest, at X: -95, Y: 78. This island is located on the south west area of the World Map, and it requires the Mist Cleaner 1000 Boat Improvement.
It also has just one coal mining node to find:
Once you’re on the island, simply walk to your left to find the coal node beside the bottom of a cliff.
Coal Recipe in the Kitchen
On top of mining coal, you can also make coal inside the kitchen as a recipe.
Simply head inside and input some sawdust (from the sawmill) in the oven. Once the oven is done counting down, your sawdust will turn into coal.
Growing Coal
Once you have some coal, you also have the option of growing them on any of the Turtle Sisters. Once unlocked, these giant turtles allow you to plant coal on their backs for future mining.
You can find all three Turtle Sisters in these locations:
- Olga (X: 81, Y: 28)
- Masha (X: -91, Y: 138)
- Irina (X: 127, Y: -76)
How To Make Carbon Powder
To make some carbon powder, you will first need the Crusher building. For this, you need:
- 7 Pulsar Ingots
- 15 Ash Planks
- 5 Zinc Ingots
Just put some coal into the Crusher and you’ll get out Carbon Powder.
Coal in the Foundry
Besides using coal for crafting, coal is also required inside the Foundry whenever you want to smelt something.
Simply head inside the building and put some coal in the furnace before placing any type of ore inside the compartment. You’ll need to use some coal every time you smelt anything in here.
